How we make TV and media units for East Sheen

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. People normally come to us about somewhere to keep games tidy and cables trailing across the wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around East Sheen, the living room is often two rooms knocked through, with a chimney breast in each half. One pair of alcoves might take shelves and the other cupboards, a TV or a desk. Some internal walls in houses of that age are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit what’s behind the paint, and long shelves are sized so they don’t sag under books.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

TV and media units in East Sheen: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around East Sheen were built before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 27 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of East Sheen. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. Around East Sheen, about 58% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Richmond upon Thames as a whole, about 38%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of TV and media units.

For families living near Thomson House School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. For an older house near All Saints' Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

East Sheen is about 3 miles west of Twickenham, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. How fitting works for TV and media units

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop, with cable routes planned in.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Advice

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in East Sheen?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in East Sheen?

Yes, we work across Richmond upon Thames, East Sheen included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.

The problems TV and media units solve

Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Bought units seldom suit an alcove, a slope or an uneven wall, and a bespoke unit is made for the space.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • A cabinet that traps heat
  • A screen at the wrong height
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • Boxes and consoles on the floor

Close to Palewell Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?

When you need someone else

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Practical tips

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf

Painted finishes feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them.

Tag each lead at both ends, so changes later are simple.
