Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

What you see of the storage is mostly the doors and drawer fronts. They can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the hall. Their tops follow the angle of the stairs.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Because it cuts cleanly, MDF is ideal for the angled panels that follow the stairs. We use a moisture-resistant grade, which stays stable and takes paint well. Most of what you see on the finished storage is MDF.

Under-stairs storage for homes in East Sheen

Under-stairs storage is not only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections built in our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in East Sheen, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about cleaning things with no proper home and open space under the stairs that collects clutter.

A Victorian or Edwardian terrace typically has a long, narrow hall leading to the stairs. Around East Sheen, a large share of homes date from before 1919, so every bit of depth is weighed up when storage is planned. Even shallow storage can hold a lot without narrowing the way through.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Do you need under-stairs storage in East Sheen?

A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

People typically get in touch with us about needs like these:

  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter
  • The low end of the space going to waste
  • Storage that does not match the hallway
  • A fuse board that is hard to get to

Chiswick House, about 1.3 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the space under the stairs may hold the meters or the fuse board, and the cupboards are planned around them.

What to check before you book

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • Is it spray painted or hand painted?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it is easy to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Questions we’re often asked

I live near Mortlake station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

Is parking a problem for fitting in East Sheen?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Let us know when you first get in touch.

Could the space under my stairs take a desk?

In many homes it’s possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. A built-in desk with shelves above and drawers below can work well. New sockets or lights are for your electrician, and we leave a route for the cables.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so let us know about permits and bays at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs, and whether the meters or fuse board are in there.
  2. We visit to measure the space and go through the design with you.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage we have discussed, for you to read through.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to the colour you chose. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Getting a quote

Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us about the room. You receive a written quote after the visit.

Advice

Honest limits

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Altering or cutting into the stairs
  • New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Gas pipework, which needs an engineer on the Gas Safe Register

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitted storage in East Sheen

Homes built before 1919 make up about 58% of the housing in the area around East Sheen, with about 15% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of East Sheen include Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east, and Hare and Hounds Public House (Grade II), under half a mile east. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 32% of households in the neighbourhood around East Sheen live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a terraced house, the space under the stairs often holds the meters or the fuse board, and they must stay accessible.

Close to Palewell Park? Living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.
