TV and media units in Teddington

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places. That’s work for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s best done before we fit, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. People usually come to us about equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and empty alcoves beside the TV, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, while the walls inside can be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Teddington date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how TV and media units are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it, especially behind loaded shelves.

If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Structural changes to the wall

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What it’s made from

  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated cabinets

How fitting day works

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear.

Before fitting day

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, use our contact form.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

Is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. Alcoves and recesses in period houses are rarely a standard width or depth, so off-the-shelf pieces either don’t fit or leave a gap either side. Made for the space, the furniture uses the full width and height.

We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Living-room carpentry in Teddington: local notes

About 46% of the homes in the area around Teddington went up before 1919, and about 17% between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Teddington include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-east, and Church of St Alban (Grade II*), under half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Richmond upon Thames sets its own rules. Where a street in Teddington is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Teddington station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If you live in a period home close to Christ Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. The wider area includes historic houses such as Strawberry Hill House, about 0.8 miles north. If your own home is a period one, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

Teddington is about 1 mile north of Twickenham, in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Teddington included. Our work takes in places right across Richmond upon Thames, large and small.

In TW11, TW12, TW2 and TW1, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. Our area takes in homes on streets like Station Road, High Street and Church Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. Teddington is near the A311 and A313, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. We also cover Strawberry Hill (1 mile north), Fulwell (1 mile north-west), Hampton Hill (1 mile west), Ham (1 mile north-east) and Eel Pie Island (1 mile north). We also make TV and media units in nearby places like Richmond (2 miles north-east), Richmond upon Thames (3 miles north-east), Hampton (2 miles west), Barnes (5 miles north-east), Kew (5 miles north-east) and Hanworth (2 miles west). Teddington is among the bigger places we cover in Richmond upon Thames.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Several things affect the price:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How square the room is
  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit.

What we need to know

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode

To get a quote for TV and media units in Teddington, get in touch through our contact form. Let us know which room it is and roughly what you have in mind, plus any rough measurements. Next comes a design visit, followed by a written quote.

Your questions about TV and media units in Teddington

Is parking a problem for fitting in Teddington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Teddington affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Do you work in Teddington?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes Teddington.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

What if I buy a larger TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV. Tell us the size you might move to during the design visit.
