Fitted wardrobes in SW13: how it works
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and people most often get in touch about an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and empty alcoves in the bedroom.
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
What affects the price in SW13
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that is part of the price. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.

Homes across SW13 and their bedrooms
Homes across SW13, Putney, Barnes and Mortlake included, have bedrooms with every kind of quirk. Fitted wardrobes are scribed to the walls and levelled on site. The paint finish, spray-painted or hand-painted, is agreed with you.
In the SW13 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. More than a third of the homes in the SW13 postcode district (about 45%) were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths, scribed to walls that are not straight. Purpose-built flats are home to about 41% of households in the SW13 postcode district, according to Census 2021. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping.
Barnes: For a family home near St Osmund's Catholic Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. Living in a block of flats near Barnes Bridge station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
For some, it’s about a calmer room. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces and keeps everything out of sight.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- Too little room for clothes
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
- No space in front for doors to swing
Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spraying coats edges and corners evenly and leaves no brush marks. The colour is agreed at the design stage.
Doors and drawer fronts
Where there is room to open them, hinged doors give full access. In a narrow room, sliding doors save space, though only part of the inside is open at once.
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Standard wardrobes cannot follow a slope. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
How we price fitted wardrobes
There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
Helping us understand the room
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Examples of the look you are after
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in SW13
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Do you do the electrics?
No. We are carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Do pictures help?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then brought to your home and fitted. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. We make, fit and finish the furniture, and plastering and decorating are for other trades. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
