Fitted wardrobes in East Sheen: what you get

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about not enough hanging space and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall.

In streets where many homes were built before 1919, as they were around East Sheen, plenty of bedrooms have solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in East Sheen

Is East Sheen in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. East Sheen is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Richmond upon Thames and London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.

I live near Mortlake station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Richmond upon Thames and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

How do I get a quote for fitted wardrobes in East Sheen?

It’s easiest to use our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a written quote after the design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Very heavy coats sit best on a shorter rail.

Every so often, check that nothing has worked loose and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

Fitted bedroom furniture in East Sheen

In the area around East Sheen, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 58%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 15%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 27 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of East Sheen. Older homes nearby may have original joinery, shutters or panelling worth keeping, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in East Sheen joins a main road, it’s worth telling us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints' Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Palewell Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Parish Church of St Mary, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What happens on fitting day

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

You don’t need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the measuring visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, use our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.

Pricing fitted wardrobes in East Sheen

The price for your room depends on:

  • Parking near your home
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

What to send when you contact us

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
