Living-room storage in Hadley Wood

About 31% of the homes in the streets around Hadley Wood went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Part of Hadley Wood is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 41% of households in the neighbourhood around Hadley Wood, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

For families living near Livingstone Primary and Nursery School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. For a flat near Hadley Wood station, TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Tudor Sports Ground? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone.

TV and media units in Hadley Wood: what you get

Everything starts with the screen. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy, with room around it so it does not look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. Typical reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves beside the TV and somewhere to keep games tidy, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Around Hadley Wood, where many homes date from the post-war decades, the living room may be simpler in shape than a period room, with fewer mouldings to work around. TV and media units can run cleanly to the ceiling. Some walls of that age are concrete or blockwork and others are partition walls, so the fixings are chosen wall by wall.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Questions we’re often asked

Is Hadley Wood in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes. We cover all of Enfield and the rest of London, and Hadley Wood is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hadley Wood?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

How long does it take to fit a TV unit?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need someone to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.

What if I buy a larger TV?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind so the unit suits your next set. Tell us the size you might move to during the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood helps.

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you judge the colour in your own room. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

What you pay depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The internal fittings
  • How big the furniture is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it’s useful to include:

  • How you want to use the space
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, use our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Honest limits

We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Moving sockets or adding new wiring, which is for your electrician
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

How fitting works for TV and media units

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. In a post-war block of flats, the route in may include communal stairs, landings and a lift, so the furniture comes in sections that fit them. If the building has rules on lift use or working hours, it helps to tell us at the design visit.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air. If you need new sockets, your electrician should do that before fitting.
  3. A written quote follows for the unit.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about parking near your home
