Hadley Wood Window Seats
We make window seats for homes in Hadley Wood, designed around the room you have. Your window seat is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.
- Needing more storage in the room
- A radiator under the window getting in the way
- A bay window that’s hard to furnish
Window seats in Hadley Wood
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Window seats for homes in Hadley Wood
A well-made window seat gives you a place to sit in the best light in the room. We design and make window seats for bays, sash windows and recesses, often with storage underneath behind a lift-up lid or drawers. For a home in Hadley Wood, it starts with a design visit to measure the window and talk through the design. We make window seats from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a room with shutters and sashes that deserves a proper seat and a radiator under the window getting in the way.
Around Hadley Wood, where many homes date from the post-war decades, you may have wide windows with radiators underneath. Seating over a radiator needs a grille or open front to keep the heat moving. Fitted storage can also use the hall, the landing or the space below the stairs, made to fit the room as it is.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on whether the seat has drawers, a lift-up lid or a radiator grille, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the bay or sash window is enough.
- At the design visit we measure the window and the radiator, and plan a grille or open front so heat isn’t trapped.
- Your written quote sets out the seat, the grille, the materials and the finish.
- We make the seat and grille in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home and scribe it to the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We can’t advise on your lease.
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.
Common questions about window seats
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hadley Wood station?
Yes, homes across Enfield and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
I live in a flat in Hadley Wood. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Window seats are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Electrical work is not something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can allow for cable routes in the design, and new sockets should be in place before fitting day.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.
Why bespoke in Hadley Wood?
With a ready-made bench, the colour is the maker’s choice. We paint the seat in the colour you choose, so it can match the woodwork or the walls. Off-the-shelf furniture tends to leave gaps at the ends of a wall and space above it, while fitted furniture fills the space. The pieces are made to the room’s own widths.
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Window seats for homes in Hadley Wood
About 31% of the homes in the streets around Hadley Wood went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 25% between 1973 and 1999, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Hadley Wood is partly covered by a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. We’ll plan where the van can stop.
If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's Church, a radiator under the window just needs a grille in the seat front. Near listed buildings like Camlet House, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Hadley Wood, older homes may keep original joinery that window seats can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Living in a block of flats near Hadley Wood station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Before and after fitting day
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Think about what you will store under the seat
- Decide if the seat is part of a larger piece
- Think about matching the woodwork or the walls
- Note the position of any radiator and its pipes
Condensation can form on windows in cold weather, so wipe the cill and the back of the seat if it gets wet. Opening the window for a while helps. Should you have a question about the seat, get in touch through our contact form and we’ll help.
Lift lids gently and lower them carefully. It keeps the hinges and edges in good order. Do not overfill drawers, as heavy loads strain the runners.
