Hadley Wood Fitted Wardrobes

Common questions about fitted wardrobes
How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Hadley Wood?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Does a conservation area in or near Hadley Wood affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?
It is common, and it’s allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a written quote once we have measured up.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.
Can I send photos before the visit?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
How we make fitted wardrobes for Hadley Wood
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It helps to think about what you wear most before we meet. Typical reasons to get in touch are an awkward slope in a loft bedroom and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Wide windows with a radiator below are common in homes from the 1950s and 1960s, so storage normally goes on the walls beside or opposite. Many homes around Hadley Wood were built in the post-war decades, so we expect to plan around a radiator. Furniture is kept clear of the radiator so the heat reaches the room.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish, so it’s clear what’s included.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Building work to create a loft room
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
Boards, parts and finishes
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
How it’s made
Spray-painted finish
Spraying in the workshop means the doors come to your home finished, in the colour agreed with you. Give the paint time to cure fully.
Hanging rails
Long rails need support so they do not bend under heavy coats when it carries winter coats. Rail lengths are planned so they stay straight.
Bedroom storage in Hadley Wood
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hadley Wood were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Hadley Wood, Historic England’s list includes Camlet House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east, and Hadley Wood Golf Club House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
The wider area includes historic houses like Wyllyotts Manor, about 2.6 miles north. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Living in a block of flats near Hadley Wood station? Then fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. For a family home near Livingstone Primary and Nursery School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

How we price fitted wardrobes
The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:
- Spray painting or hand painting
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- How square the room is
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.
Helping us understand the room
When you contact us, these help most:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Examples of the look you’re after
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we’ve measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Communal stairs in older blocks often have tight landings, so the size of each section is set by the stairs as well as the lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. Common parts are protected while we carry in.
- It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it is on and the wardrobes you want.
- We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
- You receive a quote in writing for the wardrobes.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
How to prepare
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Empty the space we’ll be working in

Advice
Flat-pack or bespoke?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
