Barnet TV and Media Units
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make TV and media units for homes in Barnet, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard

TV and media units in Barnet
About our TV and media units in Barnet
A built-in TV unit gives the screen, the boxes, the speakers and the cables one planned home. The wall is planned as a whole, rather than a stand with wires trailing behind it. For a living room in Barnet, the first step is a design visit to measure up and look at your equipment. If your home has empty alcoves beside the TV and cables trailing across the wall, that is what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Every room has its fixed points: the window, the door, the radiator and the sockets. In any home in Barnet, those set the layout for TV and media units before anything else. After that, the mix of cupboards, shelves and open space follows how you live.
Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something is not quite right, tell us before anything is made.

What happens on fitting day
Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

Starting with a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Advice
Your questions about TV and media units in Barnet
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Barnet?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Barnet?
Yes, Barnet is within the area we cover, which takes in all of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and go through the design, followed by a quote.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you have chosen.
How do you get large furniture into a flat?
It’s made in sections, sized for the route as well as the room. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
Where should speakers go in a TV unit?
We plan open spaces for speakers and soundbars. Closed doors muffle sound, so we leave them open.
Who chooses the colour?
You do. We agree the colour with you.
Why bespoke in Barnet?
Not every bought cabinet allows enough air for warm equipment. Ventilation is designed in where equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or vented doors. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, rather than where you need them. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, which we write after seeing the room.
Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Barnet

- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- Every London borough and the City of London covered
- Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
Read bespoke vs off-the-shelf or what to look for in a quote.
When is bespoke worth it?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.
Barnet homes and TV and media units
In the area around Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 26%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Near the centre of Barnet, Historic England’s list includes Odeon Cinema (Grade II), less than half a mile west, and Church of St Mark (Grade II), about 0.5 miles north. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 43% of households in the area around Barnet live in detached or semi-detached houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
Close to Highlands Gardens? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a period home close to St John's United Reformed Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What else we make in Barnet
Is it time for TV and media units?
Most people come to us because of the cables. Cables run everywhere, from the screen to the boxes and the wall and nothing off the shelf hides them all. A built-in unit gives them a planned route.
Here are some of the needs we are asked about most:
- A tangle of wires behind the TV
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
- Empty alcoves beside the TV
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
For a flat near New Barnet station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well, so we use it for panels, doors and the faces you see.
Plinths and scribe strips
Period walls normally need scribing. It is what gives the unit its built-in look.
