TV and media units for homes in Harrow on the Hill

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes and the cable route behind it. If it stands on the unit, we size the top to suit. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and cables trailing across the wall.

In a semi from the 1920s or 1930s, the front room typically has a bay at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Harrow on the Hill, so that layout is worth knowing well. TV and media units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.

We write quotes in plain English, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish, all taken from the design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in Harrow on the Hill

Does a conservation area in or near Harrow on the Hill affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you make TV and media units for homes in Harrow on the Hill?

Yes, we work across Harrow, Harrow on the Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Where should speakers go in a TV unit?

Speakers sound better in the open than shut in a cupboard. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen with open bays for bigger speakers. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

How do I get a quote?

It’s easiest to message us from the contact page with a few details about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a quote in writing.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

Can the TV be wall-mounted with a unit around it?

We can plan for either a wall-mounted TV or one standing on the unit. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.

Where other trades come in

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
  • Taking out a fireplace or chimney breast
  • Painting the walls and ceiling

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but the wires still show between the stand, the wall and the screen. A built-in unit has routes planned through it, with access left for later changes. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.

Why us?

  • Finished by spray or by hand
  • More than 300 projects completed
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

Flats, conversions and lettings

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. We come to measure and talk through screen height, speakers and cables.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time

How to get a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To share them, get in touch through our contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
