Common questions about TV and media units

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Roxeth?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Does a conservation area in or near Roxeth affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can a TV unit hold speakers?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Tell us the speaker sizes when we visit.

TV and media units in Roxeth: what you get

In many period living rooms, the chimney breast and its two alcoves shape the whole wall. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. Most enquiries start with boxes with no ventilation and speakers muffled behind doors, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Roxeth, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard units come in fixed sizes, and rarely fill an alcove or a wall. A bespoke unit is scribed to the walls and can run to the ceiling. Doors, windows and radiators rarely leave a gap that matches a standard width, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and talk about colour and finish.
  3. You get a written quote covering the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it’s in and is easy to touch up later. Go gently with new paintwork while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood, sized for the span, keeps it flat.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

TV and media units in Roxeth: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 42% of the housing in the streets around Roxeth, with about 19% built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Roxeth is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. Strict stopping rules apply on red routes, which TfL runs. If you live on or close to a main road in Roxeth, let us know during the design visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

For families living near Roxeth Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If you live in a flat close to Sudbury Hill Harrow station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Do you need TV and media units in Roxeth?

Open-plan living is another reason. Built-in furniture makes that wall look planned and holds books and everyday things as well.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Boxes with no ventilation
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Cables trailing across the wall

Near listed buildings like The Old Schools, about 0.6 miles north-east of the centre of Roxeth, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.
