When is bespoke worth it?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

TV and media units in Harrow Weald

TV units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood in our workshop. You choose a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, in the colour you prefer. We work across London, including Harrow Weald once the design and quote are agreed. If your home has a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste, that is what TV and media units are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Harrow Weald, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. New plasterboard in an extension and older brick or block in the original house take different fixings.

The quote comes in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?

TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors aren’t perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It helps to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What happens on fitting day

You are welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so the day itself is about careful fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses usually have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in along with the room itself. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place.

  1. You send us some details about the TV, the boxes and the speakers you use.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. We send a written quote for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough sizes. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.

Built-in living-room furniture in Harrow Weald

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Harrow Weald were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 49%) and before 1919 (about 19%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Harrow Weald include Harrow Weald House Farm (Grade II*), under half a mile north-east, and Church of St Joseph (catholic) (Grade II), less than half a mile south. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, such as fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 41% of households in the streets around Harrow Weald, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that typically has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

For an older house near St Michael & All Angels, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a family home near Salvatorian Roman Catholic College, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place.

FAQs: TV and media units in Harrow Weald

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Harrow Weald?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London, and Harrow Weald is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Does a conservation area in or near Harrow Weald affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Is there room for a soundbar?

Speakers work best in open spaces rather than behind doors. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Bring the sizes to the design visit.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two options: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Walls and floors that are not true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so it sits tight to the room.

Can the TV unit fit a bigger TV later?

The space can be sized for a larger TV, if you expect to upgrade. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Materials and finishes

Shelves

Speakers and books suit open shelves.

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch up.

Do you need TV and media units in Harrow Weald?

Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Standard TV stands rarely suit an awkward wall, and that is where a bespoke unit helps.

Common reasons to get in touch include:

  • Bought furniture that does not suit the room
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • A big screen that dominates the wall
  • Leads that show from every angle

For a flat near Headstone Lane station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
