About our window seats in Harrow on the Hill

A seat under a bedroom or nursery window can store toys, bedding or books. With deep drawers or a lift-up lid, it becomes useful storage as well as a place to sit. Drawers can be easier than a lid for children to use. In Harrow on the Hill, the design visit is where the details are settled. If your home has wanting a quiet place to read and a radiator under the window getting in the way, that is what window seats are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

In a family house, the hall and stairs usually carry the most clutter. Around Harrow on the Hill, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses make up a big part of the housing, well-planned storage by the door or under the stairs can take a lot of it. Meters and fuse boards stay easy to reach.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Ready-made seats rarely allow for a radiator. Placed in front of a radiator, they block the warmth. We design a grille into the seat so the radiator keeps working. Off-the-shelf units come in set widths, so a run along a wall normally ends with a gap, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Questions we’re often asked

Can you make window seats for a home in Harrow on the Hill?

Yes. Harrow on the Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Harrow and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do you cover homes near Sudbury Hill Harrow station?

Yes. We cover all of Harrow and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What is a window seat made from?

The seat is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the frame and seat, and MDF takes paint well for the fronts and grilles. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.

Can you build a window seat over a radiator?

Yes. Many windows have a radiator beneath, and we design the seat around it. A grille in the front lets the heat into the room. Anything stored over the radiator will stay warm, so we plan the storage with that in mind.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

How fitting works for window seats

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it is going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the shape of the bay or recess and what goes under the seat, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It’s useful to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. The pieces are levelled, fitted to the walls and fixed back.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a window seat.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the window, the radiator and what you need. Shutters and cills are noted too.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your window seat is built in our workshop, shaped to the window.
  5. The seat is fitted and set level, ready for a cushion, with the lids or drawers checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand

Why people ask for window seats in Harrow on the Hill

Most people simply want to use the window. A bay can be an tricky space for furniture, and a seat makes it part of the room. It gives you a place to sit in the light.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • A radiator under the window getting in the way
  • Off-the-shelf pieces that never quite fit the window
  • A sash window with space beneath it going to waste
  • Needing more storage in the room

For families living near St George’s Primary Catholic Voluntary Academy, window seats can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • A written quote that sets out the job

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Flats, leases and landlords

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we’ve measured the way in.

Window seats for homes in Harrow on the Hill

About 47% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Harrow on the Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 14% between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Part of Harrow on the Hill is in a conservation area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Harrow sets its own rules. If parking near you is controlled, a visitor permit or a bay suspension may be needed, and the council arranges suspensions, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Sudbury Hill Harrow station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near Christ Church, the deep reveals of an older window can frame a seat neatly.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s quick to buy.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
