About our TV and media units in Higham Hill

Media equipment warms up as it runs, so equipment can’t simply be shut in a closed cupboard. Ventilation is planned into the design, with open backs, gaps or vented doors where they’re needed. Equipment makers often say how much space their boxes need around them. People usually come to us about alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and cables trailing across the wall; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the walls behind TV and media units could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. That is why every wall is checked at the measuring visit before the fixings are chosen. With a chimney breast, TV and media units normally fill the alcoves; without one, they can run along a whole wall.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, with scribing where they wander and packing where floors dip. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Before we arrive

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Pricing TV and media units in Higham Hill

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • How big the furniture is
  • How square the room is

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

What to send when you get in touch

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a written quote afterwards.

Common questions about TV and media units

I live near Northumberland Park (London) station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Waltham Forest and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Higham Hill?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.

How do you get large furniture into a flat?

The furniture is built in sections, sized for the route along with the room itself. At the design visit, we measure the route as well as the room.

How long will the fitting take?

The time on site depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and talk through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a written quote.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

We do not do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

Do you need TV and media units in Higham Hill?

The most common reason is a mess of wires. Cables run everywhere, from the screen to the boxes and the wall, and no stand ever quite hides them. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

The wider area includes historic houses such as Bruce Castle, about 1.7 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Have they thought about parking near you?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What TV and media units can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work
  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How it works.

Close to Lloyd Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If your home is one of the older houses near St Andrew's Christian Centre, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
