Living-room storage in Higham Hill
About 43% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Higham Hill went up before 1919, and about 26% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Waltham Forest included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Higham Hill. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit. About 35% of households in the streets around Higham Hill live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and alcove units are made to those widths.
If you live near Lloyd Park, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. For a flat near Northumberland Park (London) station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Higham Hill is about 1 mile south-east of Walthamstow, within the London Borough of Waltham Forest. We design and make alcove units for homes in Higham Hill and across Waltham Forest, as part of our work in every London borough. Higham Hill is one of 19 places on our list for Waltham Forest.
In E17, N17 and E4, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets such as Keith Road, Manor Road and Folly Lane, along with the roads around them, whether you want alcove units or another piece made for the room. Nearby, we also make alcove units in Warner Estate (1 mile south-east), Walthamstow (1 mile south-east), Tottenham Hale (1 mile south-west), Tottenham (1 mile west) and Walthamstow Village (1 mile south-east). Across the rest of Waltham Forest, our area takes in Leyton (3 miles south-east), Chingford (2 miles north-east), Bakers Arms (2 miles south-east), Leytonstone (3 miles south-east), Holloway Down (4 miles south-east) and Bushwood Area of Leytonstone (3 miles south-east).

Alcove units in Higham Hill: what you get
A classic layout is a low cupboard with open shelves above. The cupboards take the things you’d rather not see, and the shelves are for books and favourite objects. The top of the cupboard makes a useful surface at a comfortable height. We set the heights to suit the room and what you’ll store. People typically come to us about alcoves that are wasted space and old alcove cupboards that have seen better days; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Where housing types are mixed, as they are in much of London, living rooms vary a lot in shape. Some have alcoves either side of a chimney breast, some a bay window, and some neither. The design for your home in Higham Hill starts from its own walls, with shelves sized so they do not sag.
Where other trades are needed, for example an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Decide what goes behind doors and what goes on show
- Note the sizes of large things you want to store
- Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
- Move things out of the alcoves so we can measure properly
To clean painted units, a soft cloth that is barely damp is enough. Avoid abrasive pads and strong cleaning sprays, which can dull or mark the paint. Wipe it dry when you’ve finished.
Every so often, check that hinges and handles haven’t worked loose, and adjust any door that starts to catch.
FAQs: alcove units in Higham Hill
Is Higham Hill in the area you cover for alcove units?
Yes. We cover all of Waltham Forest and the rest of London, and Higham Hill is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Higham Hill?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Can alcove units be fitted to uneven walls?
Yes. Each alcove is measured during the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
How tall should alcove units be?
That depends on the room and what you’d like to store. In a tall period room, units can stop under the picture rail or the cornice. We agree the height at the design visit.
Is it time for alcove units?
Others want a proper home for books, records or a TV. We can plan an alcove unit around exactly what you have, with shelf heights and depths to suit.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve include:
- Walls too uneven for standard furniture
- Worn or badly fitted alcove units
- Units that sit well with original features
- A desk that tucks into an alcove
The wider area includes historic houses like Bruce Castle, about 1.7 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why alcove units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
What to check before you book
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
What we don’t do
We are carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It is useful to know these before you plan the job:
- Redecorating, which is for your decorator
- Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Removing or altering a chimney breast, which is structural work
If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
What goes into it
- Adjustable shelves
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Scribed side panels
- Panelled or flat doors
From workshop to your room
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it sits neatly against the room. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the alcoves and what goes in them, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. For a flat, building rules and lift booking are worth checking early; for a house, steps, paths and parking are the things to mention. We plan the details of the day at the design visit. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- You contact us with a few details about the chimney breast and alcoves.
- We visit to measure the alcoves top, middle and bottom, and check the floor for level.
- We send the design, materials and finish in a quote in writing.
- In our workshop the units are made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on the edges that meet the wall.
- At fitting, we set each unit level on a plinth or feet and trim that edge to follow the wall.
Before fitting day
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Bespoke alcove units or ready-made?
Shop-bought shelving and cabinets can go in an alcove, and they’re normally cheaper. The trouble is usually the gaps: standard sizes seldom match the alcove, and walls that are not straight show up every gap. A bespoke unit is built to the alcove and scribed to follow the wall. Standard units come with shelves and rails where the maker put them, which may not suit what you need to store. Fitted furniture is laid out inside around your things.
There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, discuss the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
