TV and media units in Maypole

TV and media units in Maypole

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. Any chimney vent is kept clear. We make TV and media units from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about wasted space around the screen and space for a soundbar and speakers.

Ceilings in interwar houses tend to be lower than in Victorian ones, and the proportions of TV and media units are set to match. If yours is one of the interwar houses, semis or detached homes that make up much of the housing around Maypole, the cornice may be plain or missing, so the furniture can run straight to the ceiling. Any skirting is cut around neatly.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How fitting works for TV and media units

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are normally straighter. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish, for you to look over.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Arranging a design visit

Advice

TV and media units in Maypole: local notes

In the streets around Maypole, the largest groups of homes date from between 1945 and 1972 (about 59%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. There are 13 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Maypole. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Each London borough runs its own parking controls, and Bromley is no exception. Where a street in Maypole is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

For a flat near Knockholt station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. Close to Hewitt's Chalk Bank? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Maypole Cottages, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf TV units come in a few set colours. Ours are painted in a colour agreed with you, by spray or by hand. Off-the-shelf furniture comes in a few set depths, so they can stick out too far or waste space behind. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives a smooth surface for a painted finish with crisp edges.

Shelves

Speakers and books suit open shelves.

When you need someone else

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Connecting and setting up your equipment
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can message us from the contact page and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Cable routes

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Check each box’s guidance on ventilation and clearances
  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen
  • Let us know about parking and access during the design visit

Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. At first, lift boxes and speakers into place rather than pushing them.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves.

Your questions about TV and media units in Maypole

Does a conservation area in or near Maypole affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Maypole?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it’s what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

What materials do you use?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.

Can a built-in unit hide all the wires?

We plan cable routes through the unit from the start. Where cables reach the wall depends on the sockets.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers. Each box should have its own space, and it is worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.
