Ask about TV and media units in St Mary Cray
Bespoke TV and media units or ready-made?
A bespoke unit is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.
Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Why choose us
- We visit, measure and talk through the design before we quote
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
- Work across the whole of London
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

TV and media units in St Mary Cray: what you get
Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar can sit on a shelf below the screen, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Closing speakers in a cupboard muffles them. People normally come to us about a cabinet that traps heat and set-top boxes stacked on a stand; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Around St Mary Cray, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing, so that layout is worth knowing well. TV and media units usually go on the chimney breast wall, leaving the bay clear, though every room is measured first.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the TV unit designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

From workshop to your room
With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Interwar houses normally have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. TV and media units arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You describe the TV wall and your equipment.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with ventilation for boxes and amplifiers.
- A written quote follows. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
- Once you are happy, the unit is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable routes planned in.
- We bring it to your home and fit it in place, with the cable routes left clear.
Preparing the room
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Tell us about parking near your home
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Advice
Questions from St Mary Cray
Is parking a problem for fitting in St Mary Cray?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.
I live near St Mary Cray station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.
How do you hide the TV cables?
We plan cable routes through the unit from the start. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are, so it helps to plan sockets with your electrician.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?
There are two ways to finish it: by spray or by hand. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations, including fixing furniture to the walls. Check your lease, as we can’t advise on it.
Flats, conversions and leaseholders
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.
Living-room storage in St Mary Cray
About 42% of the homes in the streets around St Mary Cray went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 22% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. The National Heritage List records 15 entries within half a mile of the centre of St Mary Cray. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 49% of households in the streets around St Mary Cray, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.
Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary, under half a mile north-east of the centre of St Mary Cray, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. If your children go to Poverest Primary School or a school nearby, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Jubilee Country Park? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Tips worth knowing
Getting the most from TV and media units starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
- Let us know about parking and access at the measuring visit
- Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow
- Book your electrician first if sockets need to move
Paint is dry to the touch well before it has fully cured. For the first while, place equipment gently rather than sliding it, so the paint is not scuffed.
Do not stack boxes on top of each other in one space, as they trap each other’s heat. Give each its own space.
How we price TV and media units
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- The overall size of the piece
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Doors and drawers, and how many
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
Before the design visit
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Any ideas or images you have saved
- A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, fill in our short enquiry form, and we will arrange a design visit.
