TV and media units in Goddington

The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with a margin so it isn’t a tight squeeze. The height of the screen matters as well: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about games, controllers and remotes everywhere and standard units leaving gaps.

Around Goddington, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, and that layout shapes where TV and media units work best. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Questions from Goddington

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Goddington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

I live near Chelsfield station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.

What happens at the design visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Electrical work isn’t something we do. Your electrician handles sockets and wiring, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We share the layout so the sockets line up with the design.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position. The bracket needs a sound wall so we check the wall during the design visit.

Looking after your furniture

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
  • Decide whether the TV will be wall-mounted or stand on the unit
  • Decide where you’ll sit, so the screen height suits it
  • Note the size of each box and speaker

When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear as things change.

What it is made from

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish suits a TV unit in a period room. You choose the colour.

Shelves

Shelves are sized for the equipment and speakers they carry, with space around for air.

Is it time for TV and media units?

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Drawers and cupboards hold them out of sight, and open shelves hold what’s used every day.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • Alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste
  • Somewhere to keep games tidy

If you live near Hewitt's Chalk Bank, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Where other trades come in

We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Painting the walls and ceiling
  • Installing aerials, satellite dishes or broadband
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

How fitting day works

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are usually straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough sizes. To share them, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.
