TV and media units in Biggin Hill: local notes

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 42% of the housing in the streets around Biggin Hill, with about 29% built between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Biggin Hill include St Mark's Church (Grade II), under half a mile east, and Norheads Farmhouse (Grade II), under half a mile north-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. More than a third of the homes in the streets around Biggin Hill (about 42%) were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Post-war rooms tend to be simple shapes, often without a chimney breast, so a full wall of TV and media units is often the answer, fixed to suit the wall, which may be concrete or block.

For families living near Oaklands Primary Academy, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Down House, about 1.7 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live in a flat close to Woldingham station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

Biggin Hill is in the London Borough of Bromley, about 6 miles north-east of Orpington. Wherever you are in Biggin Hill, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Our Bromley coverage includes Biggin Hill, along with the rest of the borough.

In TN16 and BR6, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like Rushdene Walk, Mount Pleasant and Stock Hill, along with the roads around them, whether you want TV and media units or another piece made for the room. Main roads around Biggin Hill include the A233. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the measuring visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. Close by, we also work in Aperfield (1 mile south-east), Luxted (1 mile north-east), Berry's Green (1 mile east), Single Street (1 mile east) and Leaves Green (2 miles north). Across the rest of Bromley, our area takes in Orpington (6 miles north-east), Bromley (6 miles north), Beckenham (7 miles north), St Mary Cray (7 miles north-east), Chislehurst (7 miles north) and Penge (8 miles north-west).

How we make TV and media units for Biggin Hill

The screen size comes first. The opening is planned around your current TV, or a bigger one if you are likely to upgrade, with room around it so it does not look squeezed. The height of the screen matters as well: it should suit where you sit, not just the wall. People typically come to us about set-top boxes stacked on a stand and empty alcoves beside the TV, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Around Biggin Hill, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the main room is often well proportioned, with a bay, a chimney breast and not many other recesses. That leaves room for TV and media units in the alcoves, along a full wall or around the chimney breast, depending on how you use the room. The carcasses are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, painted in a colour agreed with you.

You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

When you need someone else

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • New sockets behind the TV, which need an electrician
  • Configuring the TV and sound system
  • Removing a chimney breast or any structural work

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

What it is made from

Spray-painted finish

Because it’s sprayed before fitting, the unit comes painted. Treat it gently while the paint cures fully.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes. Fronts are painted to match the unit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking and unloading on your street

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

What to send when you get in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Examples of the look you are after
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Questions from Biggin Hill

Do you cover homes near Woldingham station?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Biggin Hill?

Yes. Biggin Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Do photos help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease.

Fitting day, step by step

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you and explain how to look after the paint. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in as well as the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it’s going, with floors protected throughout.

  1. You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Starting with a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, get in touch through our contact form.
