Why people ask for TV and media units in Orpington

The most common reason is a mess of wires. Cables run everywhere, from the screen to the boxes and the wall. Built-in units give cables somewhere to go.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Standard units leaving gaps
  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • A big screen that dominates the wall

Close to Jubilee Country Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Our checklist for choosing a carpenter

TV and media units in Orpington: what you get

Cables are the part most people want to hide. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are a tangle of wires behind the TV and set-top boxes stacked on a stand.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Orpington, so that layout is worth knowing well. We tend to plan TV and media units along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light, though every room is measured first.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, after measuring the route during the design visit.

Questions we are often asked

I live near St Mary Cray station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Orpington?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?

If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position and the cable route behind it. The bracket needs a sound wall, which we look at during the design visit.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

We plan ventilation into the unit for boxes, consoles and amplifiers, with open backs, gaps or openings. We give each box its own space.

Do pictures help?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, use our contact form.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Doors can hide boxes and clutter.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wide panels around a screen need to stay flat. MDF gives smooth, even surfaces for painting.

Living-room carpentry in Orpington: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 39% of the housing in the area around Orpington, with about 31% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Orpington include Church of All Saints (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Perry Hall Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live in a period home close to St Andrew's, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near St Mary Cray station? Then TV and media units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Orpington sits close to the A224 and B258. If your home is on one of them, tell us at the design visit, as some main roads have strict stopping rules. If you are just outside Orpington, we also cover Poverest (1 mile north), Derry Downs (1 mile east), St Mary Cray (1 mile north), St Paul's Cray (1 mile north) and Goddington (1 mile south). We also make TV and media units in nearby places such as Bromley (4 miles west), Beckenham (6 miles west), Chislehurst (3 miles north-west), Penge (7 miles west), Anerley (8 miles west) and Crystal Palace (8 miles west). What it costs

Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The internal fittings
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Helping us understand the room

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. Where you can, include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray-painted finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit it in your home; a hand-painted finish is applied once it is in and is easy to touch up later.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
