TV and Media Units in Norwood New Town
In Norwood New Town, we design TV and media units around the room you actually have. Your TV unit is designed at a visit to your home and made at our workshop.
- Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
- Bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room

Flats, conversions and lettings
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
About our TV and media units in Norwood New Town
The screen size comes first. We plan the space around the TV you have, or the one you expect to buy. Viewing height matters too: we set it to suit the sofa, not the shape of the wall. If your home has games, controllers and remotes everywhere and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.
Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, so the walls behind TV and media units could be solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. We check what the walls are made of during the design visit, then choose the fixings. With a chimney breast, TV and media units usually fill the alcoves; without one, they can run along a whole wall.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Plan any new sockets with your electrician before fitting
- Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
- Let us know about access early
- Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
When you change equipment, use the cable routes we planned instead of making new ones. It keeps the unit tidy.
Heavy equipment is best kept low.
Living-room carpentry in Norwood New Town: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Norwood New Town were built before 1919 (about 30%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 22%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The Harold Road Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Norwood New Town. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If you live on or close to a main road in Norwood New Town, let us know during the design visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.
For an older house near New Covenant Church-Equipping People, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If you live near Long Meadow, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it.

Fitting day, step by step
On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections built in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by arrangement.

Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Do you need TV and media units in Norwood New Town?
Some have tried off-the-shelf units that never quite fitted. Standard TV stands rarely suit an tricky wall, and that is where a bespoke unit helps.
Some of the things we’re asked to solve are these:
- Wasted space around the screen
- Bought furniture that does not suit the room
- Space for a soundbar and speakers
- Leads that show from every angle
Kingswood House, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?

Your questions about TV and media units in Norwood New Town
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gipsy Hill station?
Yes, homes across Croydon and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is Norwood New Town in the area you cover for TV and media units?
Yes. Norwood New Town is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
How do you get the furniture up the stairs?
It is made in sections, each one sized to fit the way in. At the design visit, we measure the route along with the room itself.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Does the unit work if the TV is on a bracket?
If the TV is wall-mounted, we design the unit around the bracket position, with a route for the cables. The bracket needs a sound wall, which we look at during the design visit.
How do you hide the TV cables?
We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Access panels make future changes easy. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.
