Wall beds in Norwood New Town: what you get
Safety starts with the fixing: the mechanism is fixed as its maker specifies, to a wall and floor that can take the load. At the design visit we look at the wall it will go on as solid brick, stud walls and plasterboard all need different fixings. We make wall beds from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a flexible room for a growing family and a real mattress for visitors.
Wherever your home in Norwood New Town sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Shelves, drawers and any hanging are arranged around your things.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

Could you do it yourself?
It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

How we price wall beds
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Parking near your home
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- How square the room is
- The width and height of the space
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, fill in our short enquiry form.
Getting in touch
What helps most when you first contact us:
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- What the furniture needs to hold
To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Boards, parts and paint
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting gives a traditional finish in a period room.
Moisture-resistant MDF
A painted MDF front looks crisp, so it suits the doors on the bed cabinet.
How fitting day works
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether brick, block, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- First, you let us know about the room and how you’d like it to work.
- At the design visit we measure the room, look at the wall and go through the design. We also check there’s clear space in front to lower the bed.
- You get a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and any storage around it.
- The cabinets are built in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. The finish is sprayed in our workshop or painted by hand on site.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician ahead of time
Getting a quote
It helps to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, drop us a line using the contact form, and we’ll arrange a design visit.
Advice
Wall beds for homes in Norwood New Town
Homes built before 1919 make up about 30% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Norwood New Town, with about 22% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Within a mile of the centre of Norwood New Town, 11 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Croydon sets its own rules. Where a street in Norwood New Town is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. Let us know about parking at the measuring visit.
If your children go to Rockmount Primary School or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. If you live near Long Meadow, keeping wall beds off the window wall keeps the room bright. If you live in a flat close to Gipsy Hill station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
You can buy wall bed units off the shelf, often for less, and they can work in a simple space. They’re made in standard sizes and rarely allow for an uneven wall or an alcove. Ours is made to the room you have. Ready-made pieces come with a fixed inside layout, rather than where you need them. With fitted furniture, the inside is planned around what you keep.
Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Your questions about wall beds in Norwood New Town
Is parking a problem for fitting in Norwood New Town?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having wall beds fitted in Norwood New Town?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.
Can you build shelves or a desk around a wall bed?
Yes. Shelves, cupboards or a desk can go around the bed cabinet, so the whole wall is useful. We plan it so the bed still has room to come down.
How long will the wall bed take to fit?
The time the fitting takes depends on the design and how much storage goes around the bed, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk it through at the design visit.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a written quote.
