Purley homes and TV and media units
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 31% of the housing in the streets around Purley, with about 28% built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. About 31% of homes in the streets around Purley date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms normally have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where TV and media units go. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Purley is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through at the design visit.
For families living near Christ Church CofE Primary School (Purley), low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Living in a block of flats near Purley station? Then the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If you live near Dollypers Hill, shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

How we make TV and media units for Purley
Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. We make the routes, and your electrician handles any wiring. Most enquiries start with boxes with no ventilation and clutter around the TV, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Purley, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.
Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What it’s made from
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall.
Hand-painted finish
Hand painting often suits units in older houses. You choose the colour.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.
What it costs
What you pay depends on:
- Parking and unloading on your street
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- The number of doors and drawers
- How square the room is
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It’s useful to talk about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
What to send when you get in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Examples of the look you are after
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
What happens on fitting day
Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it looks as though it was always there. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in.
- You get in touch and list what the unit has to take: the screen, boxes, consoles and speakers.
- At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
- A written quote follows for the unit.
- We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
- We fit it in your home and leave the cable routes ready for you to use.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
How to get a quote
Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Questions we’re often asked
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Purley?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Purley is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Do you cover homes near Purley station?
Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details about the room.
Do pictures help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Usually not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
How do I get started?
The first step is to get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
