Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Count your equipment, including routers and consoles
  • Talk to your electrician early about sockets
  • Let us know about access early
  • Choose how the TV will sit before the design is finished

Once your equipment is in, check that it isn’t running hot. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Don’t stack boxes on top of each other in one space because heat builds up between them. Each one needs space around it.

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. Cupboards and shelves in the alcoves can hold the boxes, speakers and books. Any chimney vent is kept clear. If your home has boxes with no ventilation and equipment with nowhere proper to go, TV and media units made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often taller than in later houses, and around Anerley, a large share of homes are that age. That gives full-height TV and media units room to reach the picture rail or the cornice, so the furniture looks as if it belongs to the house. Blocked fireplaces are common too, and a capped chimney should still be ventilated before anything is built against it.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Materials and finishes

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up later.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall, so there’s no gap.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job, and it’s easy to buy.

Do you need TV and media units in Anerley?

Games, controllers and remotes need a home. Cupboards and drawers in the unit keep them in one place.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
  • Leads that show from every angle
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall
  • Nowhere good for speakers

Close to Crystal Palace Dinosaurs? Shelving that stops short of the window keeps the view of the green.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that are not straight
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

From workshop to your room

The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. We visit to measure the wall and go through the design. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it’s useful to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, with openings for cables and air.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Empty the space we will be working in
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Getting a quote

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, particularly with rough measurements. To send them over, message us from the contact page, and we’ll suggest a time for a design visit.

FAQs: TV and media units in Anerley

Can you fit TV and media units to the uneven walls of an older house in Anerley?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Anerley?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can landlords use you for a rented flat?

Yes. Landlords and letting agents can arrange a design visit in the same way as anyone else. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not typically. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

What happens at the design visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Built-in living-room furniture in Anerley

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Anerley were built before 1919 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how TV and media units are fixed and fitted. The Crystal Palace Park Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Anerley. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Around Anerley, about 47% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of TV and media units.

If your home is one of the older houses near St Paul's, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. Living in a block of flats near Anerley station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
