Built-in bookshelves in Norwood New Town: what you get

In period rooms, shelving has to meet skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. We can cut around them, stop below them or run neatly up to them. Since period walls are rarely flat, the edges are scribed to follow them. Typical reasons to get in touch are low shelves children can reach and shelves deep enough for large books, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

You might live in a Victorian terrace, a 1930s semi, a mansion block or a recent flat, and your home in Norwood New Town could be any one of them. Each brings different walls and floors, so the design of built-in bookshelves starts with a look at what you have. Bowed walls call for scribing, and plasterboard for the right fixings.

The furniture is made in our workshop after you’ve had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Why bespoke in Norwood New Town?

Many flat-pack shelves are thin and long, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, using birch plywood, thicker shelves or supports where needed. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, so it leaves gaps at the ends and empty space above. Built-in pieces fill the space they’re made for.

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Is parking a problem for fitting in Norwood New Town?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Gipsy Hill station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

How long does it take to fit built-in bookshelves?

The time on site depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. We’ll explain what fitting day involves before we start.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.

Norwood New Town homes and built-in bookshelves

Homes built before 1919 make up about 30% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Norwood New Town, with about 22% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The centre of Norwood New Town is within about a quarter of a mile of the Harold Road Conservation Area. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. The Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London since it reached the outer boroughs on 29 August 2023. Vans bringing furniture to Norwood New Town fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

Kingswood House, about 0.8 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your home is one of the older houses near New Covenant Church-Equipping People, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at. If your children go to Rockmount Primary School or a school nearby, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

Norwood New Town is within the London Borough of Croydon, about 2 miles south-west of Thornton Heath. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Norwood New Town is part of that. We cover places right across Croydon, large and small.

Every home in SE19, SE27 and SE21 is covered for built-in bookshelves. What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

Cupboard doors in MDF stay flat and paint well. There is no grain to show through the paint.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase that fixes securely to the wall.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

There is no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • The internal fittings
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Every room is priced on its own, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

What to send when you get in touch

Getting some details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:

  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Examples of the look you are after
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

To get a quote, message us from the contact page and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a quote in writing follows.

What happens on fitting day

On the morning of the fitting, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made at our workshop come in next, a piece at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on how long and how tall the shelving is, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Parking varies a lot across London, from permit zones to private bays, so tell us what applies during the design visit. For a flat, building rules on lifts and working hours are worth checking.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the books and objects you want on show is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure, check how the wall is built and plan the spans, because long shelves under heavy books need a thicker shelf, a lip or a support.
  3. Your written quote sets out the shelving and the finish.
  4. The bookcase is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with shelves stiffened where they span furthest.
  5. We fit it in your home with fixings that suit the wall, and a hand-painted finish, if you chose one, follows on site.

Before fitting day

  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Empty the space we will be working in

Arranging a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, drop us a line using the contact form.

Practical tips

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Let us know about access early
  • Think about whether the spacing needs to change later
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records

If you have adjustable shelves, move them when they’re empty, and check the supports are fully seated.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. Mention any heavy collection you plan to add when we design the shelves, so we can allow for it.
