TV and media units for your home in Ruislip Gardens
Ruislip Gardens homes and TV and media units
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 53% of the housing in the area around Ruislip Gardens, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 5 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Ruislip Gardens. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. More than half of the homes in the area around Ruislip Gardens (about 53%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and TV and media units are planned around both.
For a family home near Ruislip High School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Ickenham Hall, about 1.3 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.
Ruislip Gardens is in the London Borough of Hillingdon, about 1 mile north of Ruislip. Homes in Ruislip Gardens are part of the area we cover for TV and media units, as part of our work in every London borough. Across Hillingdon, we cover Ruislip Gardens.
Design visits and fitting in HA4 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. We cover homes on streets like Bedford Road, Tiptree Road and Hardy Avenue, along with the roads around them, for TV and media units and any of our other fitted furniture. Nearby, we also make TV and media units in Ruislip Manor (1 mile north), Ruislip (1 mile north), Ickenham (2 miles west), Hillingdon (2 miles south-west) and Hayes (3 miles south). Across the rest of Hillingdon, our area takes in Yeading (2 miles south), Yiewsley (2 miles south), West Drayton (5 miles south-west), Yiewsley (4 miles south-west), Cowley (4 miles south-west) and Harlington (5 miles south).

About our TV and media units in Ruislip Gardens
A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That’s work for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes falls under Part P of the Building Regulations. It is best done before we fit so the sockets land in the right place. We make TV and media units from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a screen at the wrong height and equipment running hot in a closed cupboard.
In an area like Ruislip Gardens, where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, many homes have had the front and back rooms knocked together. That leaves a long room with a chimney breast on one side, which suits TV and media units along that wall. Cable routes for a TV or speakers, and space for set-top boxes, are planned at the design visit.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
Spray painting is done in the workshop, giving a smooth, even surface.
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to meet walls that aren’t straight, closing the gaps.
What it costs
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- How big the furniture is
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How square the room is
- How many doors and drawers there are
Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.
Helping us understand the room
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- How you want to use the space
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we’ve measured the way in.
Is it time for TV and media units?
Upgrading to a bigger screen is a common trigger. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- A TV that looks out of place in the room
- Clutter around the TV
- Speakers muffled behind doors
- Empty alcoves beside the TV
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
Choosing a carpenter
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Will other trades be needed, and who arranges them?
What happens on fitting day
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it’s worth mentioning during the design visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Doorways, stairs and floors are covered on the way in.
- You send us a note about the room and the unit you’d like.
- We visit to measure and talk through the design and how the unit should look in the room.
- A quote in writing follows, with the finish set out.
- The unit is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF, which takes paint well, and birch plywood.
- The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, and any hand painting is done in the room.
How to prepare
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Related advice
Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Ruislip Gardens?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Can you make TV and media units for a home in Ruislip Gardens?
Yes, Ruislip Gardens is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Hillingdon and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Should I send photos?
Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit, along with rough sizes. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.
My walls aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
