Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot advise on your lease.

TV and media units for homes in Hillingdon

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with holes, channels and access panels so leads can be added or changed later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are set-top boxes stacked on a stand and a big screen that dominates the wall.

A house from between the wars typically has lower ceilings than a Victorian one, so TV and media units are proportioned to the room rather than copied from a taller one. Where your home is one of the interwar houses or semis that are a big part of the housing around Hillingdon, there may be little or no cornice, which lets the furniture run straight up to the ceiling. The skirting is scribed around neatly.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we’ll tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Plinths and scribe strips

Scribing trims the edges on site to follow the wall, closing the gaps.

Each shelf is planned for what will sit on it.

Living-room storage in Hillingdon

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Hillingdon were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 25%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The National Heritage List records 8 entries within half a mile of the centre of Hillingdon. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Terraced houses are home to about 31% of households in the streets around Hillingdon, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and TV and media units are made to those widths.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Cedars House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. If you live near Norman Leddy Memorial Gardens, TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. If you live in a period home close to Church of St John, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.

What TV and media units cannot fix

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:

  • Plastering or decorating around the unit
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

What goes into it

  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Ventilated cabinets
  • Hand-painted finish

Tips worth knowing

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Check where the seating will go
  • Think about which things need to be seen by a remote
  • Think about whether you’ll upgrade the screen

Cupboard doors may settle slightly with use. Hinges can usually be adjusted to line them up again.

Ask your electrician about new sockets rather than running extension leads through the unit.

Fitting day, step by step

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If you have a driveway, it can make unloading simpler, so let us know at the design visit. Otherwise, a visitor permit or a nearby bay helps. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Common questions about TV and media units

I live near West Drayton station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Hillingdon?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Can you build a TV unit for a wall-mounted TV?

The unit can be planned either way. If the TV is wall-mounted, panels and shelves are arranged around the bracket and cables or we size the top for a TV that stands on it.

How do I get started?

Simply get in touch through our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, followed by a written quote.

Can you plan for a future TV?

We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot give advice on your lease.
