TV and media units in Sanderstead, Croydon

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on TV and media units in Sanderstead starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

How we make TV and media units for Sanderstead

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar typically sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we plan open spaces for them. If you’re living with boxes with no ventilation and set-top boxes stacked on a stand, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Sanderstead, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the front room may have a bay window at one end and a chimney breast on the side wall, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the TV unit we have designed for the room, what it’s made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Honest limits

It is useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers

Not sure whether your space suits TV and media units? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we will tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Cable routes
  • Ventilated cabinets

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is typically more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you.
  3. We send a written quote with the design, materials and finish, for you to look over.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop, with routes and ventilation planned in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the unit goes in, is levelled and scribed, and the cable routes are left clear. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. Flat-pack or bespoke?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is normally a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How square the room is
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Getting in touch

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Examples of the look you’re after
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, message us from the contact page.

Questions from Sanderstead

Is parking a problem for fitting in Sanderstead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Riddlesdown station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do I get a quote for TV and media units in Sanderstead?

Simply fill in our short enquiry form. It helps to send rough measurements and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, followed by a quote in writing.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can you add sockets behind the TV?

We do not do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

How long will the fitting take?

The fitting depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you see the colour in the room’s own light. Scribed edges are painted along with the rest.

Plinths and scribe strips

A plinth lifts the unit and takes up an uneven floor. It can line up with the skirting.
