Built-in bookshelves for your home in Sanderstead

Built-in bookshelves in Sanderstead

Built-in shelving fills a wall, an alcove or a whole room, and is made for that space. It runs from wall to wall and, if you like, up to the ceiling, giving your books a proper home. If you’re thinking about built-in bookshelves in Sanderstead, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through your books. We make built-in bookshelves from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are space for art books and records and alcoves beside the chimney breast going to waste.

A typical 1930s semi has a bay window at the front and a chimney breast with a recess either side. Interwar, semi-detached and detached houses make up a big part of the housing around Sanderstead, so it’s a layout worth planning for. We tend to plan built-in bookshelves along the chimney breast wall so the bay keeps its light.

We write quotes in plain English. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

What happens on fitting day

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so any section going up there is sized for them. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. Each section is assembled and fixed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A written quote follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The sections are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each section is set level and scribed to walls that are rarely straight.
  6. Your chosen finish is sprayed before fitting or painted by hand in the room.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Getting a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

When is bespoke worth it?

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is normally cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Your questions about built-in bookshelves in Sanderstead

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Sanderstead?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.

Do you cover homes near Riddlesdown station?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can my walls take a full bookcase?

We check how the wall is built at the design visit. Fixings are chosen to suit solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall, and heavy loads are fixed into sound structure. If the plaster is loose or the wall is weak, it should be put right first.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you do not need to stay in the room.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Built-in living-room furniture in Sanderstead

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Sanderstead were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 39%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 31%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Sanderstead include Church of All Saints (Grade I), under half a mile east, and The White House (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. More than a third of the homes in the neighbourhood around Sanderstead (about 39%) date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, which shape where built-in bookshelves go.

Living in a block of flats near Riddlesdown station? Then the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. Addington Palace, about 2.3 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves. For families living near Gresham Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room.

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:

  • Book your electrician first if sockets need moving
  • Count roughly how many shelves your books fill now
  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Note the sizes of your largest books and records

Take the books off before moving an adjustable shelf, and check the supports are fully seated.

Overloading is the main cause of sagging. If you plan to add a heavy collection later, say so at the design visit.

Why bespoke in Sanderstead?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, and they can sag under a full load. Bespoke shelves are sized for the span and the weight, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed. Standard widths rarely add up to the length of a real wall, so fitted furniture is made to the wall’s own length. It can use the full height too.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall, after checking the walls during the design visit.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so let us know about it at the design visit.
