TV and media units in Snaresbrook: what you get

In a room with a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for media storage. The alcoves can take cupboards for equipment and shelves above, with the TV in one alcove or on the chimney breast. We keep any vent in the chimney breast clear. People normally come to us about empty alcoves beside the TV and nowhere good for speakers, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Lots of semis and interwar houses have been extended at the back or had the back rooms knocked through, which matters around Snaresbrook, where homes like these are a big part of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can hide boxes and clutter.

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish can be done on site once the unit is fitted. Small marks are simple to touch up.

Is bespoke worth it?

TVs keep getting bigger, and a stand that suits today’s set may look small with the next. We can plan the opening with a bigger screen in mind if you expect to upgrade. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. Fitted furniture is made to the depth the space can take.

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What you get with us

  • Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Work across the whole of London

Could you do it yourself?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Your questions about TV and media units in Snaresbrook

I live in a flat in Snaresbrook. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. TV and media units are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Does a conservation area in or near Snaresbrook affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

How is the furniture painted?

There are two choices: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. Your quote sets out which you’ve chosen.

Will the cables be hidden?

We design the unit so cables run out of sight. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. For a wall-mounted TV, a route behind the screen is planned in.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Some interwar and suburban streets have driveways, which can make unloading easier, so it is worth mentioning at the measuring visit. Otherwise, details of permits or nearby bays help. Floors and doorways are protected while the pieces come in.

  1. To begin, drop us a line using the contact form; a brief note on the TV wall and everything that plugs into it is plenty.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and plan cable routes and ventilation, as set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers need air.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the unit in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, leaving routes for cables and gaps for air.
  5. The unit is fitted and scribed to the walls, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish and the routes left clear.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. When you are ready, use our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a written quote.

Advice

TV and media units for homes in Snaresbrook

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Snaresbrook were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 33%) and before 1919 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Snaresbrook include Forest School (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Forest School Chapel (Grade II), less than half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Snaresbrook is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

If you live in a flat close to Wood Street station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter in the Forest, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. Valentines Mansion, about 2.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

What affects the price in Snaresbrook

The price for your room depends on:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • How square the room is
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The type of home and how the room is reached

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
