How we make TV and media units for Gants Hill

Set-top boxes, consoles and amplifiers give off heat, so sealing equipment in a cupboard is not a good idea. We plan ventilation into the unit, using open backs, gaps or openings where equipment sits. It is worth checking each maker’s guidance on clearances. If you’re living with nowhere good for speakers and bought furniture that doesn’t suit the room, TV and media units made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Around Gants Hill, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the living room may be a good size but with fewer recesses than a Victorian house. TV and media units can fill the alcoves, run the length of a wall or frame the chimney breast. Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood keep the pieces stable, and the paint finish is agreed with you.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

TV and media units in Gants Hill: local notes

About 53% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Gants Hill went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 19% before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Gants Hill, Historic England’s list includes Valentines Mansion (Grade II*), under half a mile south-west, and Gardener's Cottage (Grade II), under half a mile south-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can need listed building consent from the council. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your street in Gants Hill joins a main road, it is worth telling us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

If you live near Valentines Park, a room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. For an older house near St George's Church, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units. For a family home near Gearies Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Gants Hill is within the London Borough of Redbridge, about 3 miles north-west of Woodford. Anywhere in Gants Hill, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a written quote, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. We cover places right across Redbridge, large and small.

In IG2, IG6 and IG1, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. If your home is on a street like Bute Road, Perth Road and Shere Road, or close by, we can visit to measure up for TV and media units. Gants Hill is near the A123; on busy main roads, unloading TV and media units takes a little planning. Close by, we also work in Newbury Park (1 mile east), Barkingside (1 mile north-east), Redbridge (1 mile west), Cranbrook (1 mile south-west) and Ilford (1 mile south). Elsewhere in Redbridge, we also cover Woodford (3 miles north-west), Loxford (2 miles south), Wanstead (2 miles west), South Woodford (2 miles north-west), Goodmayes (2 miles south-east) and Woodford Wells (3 miles north-west).

Flats, leases and landlords

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting is done in the workshop, for a smooth, factory-like finish that suits a modern TV wall.

Birch plywood

Long shelves under a screen need to stay straight. Birch plywood helps.

FAQs: TV and media units in Gants Hill

Is Gants Hill in the area you cover for TV and media units?

Yes, we work across Redbridge, Gants Hill included, and across the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

I live near Ilford station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Redbridge and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not usually. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. The things that affect it are:

  • The internal fittings
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How many doors and drawers there are

What goes inside matters as much as the outside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside.

Getting in touch

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling

To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a written quote follows.

From workshop to your room

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with details of the room and where it is in your home.
  2. At the design visit we measure the wall and also the hall, stairs and doorways the unit has to pass through. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are carried in, assembled and set level, ready for your equipment. The finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Ask for a quote

You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
