Snaresbrook Wall Beds

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on wall beds in Snaresbrook starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A study that doubles as a spare room
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors

Wall beds for your home in Snaresbrook

Do you need wall beds in Snaresbrook?

The most common reason is a spare room that is rarely slept in. A bed fills the room whether anyone is using it or not, and folding it away gives the room a second life.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • A guest room that sits empty most of the time
  • A proper bed instead of a sofa bed
  • Hiding the bed when it’s not in use
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Peter in the Forest, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

About our wall beds in Snaresbrook

A home office that doubles as a guest room is a common request. A wall bed with a desk or shelves beside it lets the room do both, so the bed does not dominate the working day. We can allow for cables to the desk, though any new sockets are for your electrician. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a spare room that’s rarely slept in and room for a desk and a guest bed.

The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, so fitted storage normally goes on the walls either side while the bay stays open. Around Snaresbrook, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so it’s a room shape worth planning for. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It sets out the wall bed designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What affects the cost of wall beds

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking during the design visit, so it can be planned.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Your postcode and the borough

You do not need exact measurements to get started. We measure everything properly at the design visit. To get started, drop us a line using the contact form with some details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Caring for painted furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Allow space for pillows and duvets
  • Check mattress size and weight limits
  • Decide who the bed is mainly for
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit

The mechanism maker’s guidance says how much bedding can stay on the bed when it folds away. We can build a cupboard beside the bed for extra bedding.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so think about where a chair or desk will go.

Common questions about wall beds

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Snaresbrook?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Is parking a problem for fitting in Snaresbrook?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We go through the mechanism’s limits when we measure, so you can choose with confidence.

What space does a fold-down bed take up?

It depends on the bed size and the mechanism. At the design visit we measure the room and check there is enough space in front.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Advice on your lease
  • Mattresses, which you choose to suit the mechanism
  • Building work to make a wall sound

Not sure whether your space suits wall beds? You can drop us a line using the contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Shelves or a desk alongside
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Fold-down bed mechanism
  • Moisture-resistant MDF

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there’s typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. You tell us about the room and who the bed is for.
  2. We visit to measure up and look at what the wall is made of, as the bed must be fixed securely.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the bed cabinet and storage, ready to check.
  4. We build and finish everything in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the cabinet is fitted and the bed checked as it lowers and lifts. We show you how the bed works before we leave.

Preparing the room

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Ask for a quote

To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us a little about the room and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and talk through the design, and a written quote follows.

Advice

Wall beds for homes in Snaresbrook

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Snaresbrook, with about 27% built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Within a mile of the centre of Snaresbrook, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. About 42% of households around Snaresbrook live in purpose-built flats, well above the figure for Redbridge as a whole, about 25%, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 2.4 miles south-east. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Forest School, less than half a mile south-west of the centre of Snaresbrook, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.
