Seven Kings TV and Media Units

Planning TV and media units for a home in Seven Kings? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote.

  • Nowhere good for speakers
  • A tangle of wires behind the TV
  • A TV stand that does not fit the wall

TV and media units in Seven Kings

Speakers need space to be heard properly. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, and larger speakers can go on open shelves either side. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a cabinet that traps heat and a screen at the wrong height.

A large share of the homes around Seven Kings were built before 1919, and in London most homes of that age are Victorian or Edwardian. Main rooms in houses like these usually have a chimney breast with an alcove on each side, which gives TV and media units an obvious place to go. Walls are rarely flat, so each piece is scribed to the plaster and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Bought units often have a single cable gap, but cables typically still show somewhere. We plan the cable routes into the design, with access panels for changes later. Ready-made pieces are proportioned for newer homes and can look lost in an older one, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Think about whether you want the screen on a bracket or on a shelf
  • Note which boxes need line of sight for their remotes
  • Think about the viewing height from your sofa

Once your equipment is in, check that it isn’t running hot. Do not block the gaps and openings left for air with cables or clutter.

Keep heavy speakers and amplifiers on lower shelves, with the weight spread across shelves.

Questions we’re often asked

My house in Seven Kings is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Seven Kings?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You’ll get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

What materials do you use?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, and the quote says which is used where.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Seven Kings?

Yes, we do. We work in Seven Kings and across Redbridge, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

Do I get to choose the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

Built-in living-room furniture in Seven Kings

In the neighbourhood around Seven Kings, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 45%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 28%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. All of London, Redbridge included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Seven Kings, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. That way we can plan where to load and unload.

Close to South Park? TV and media units can be planned to frame a window with a view rather than block it. The wider area includes historic houses such as Valentines Mansion, about 1.4 miles west. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live in a flat close to Seven Kings station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.

Seven Kings is about 4 miles north-west of Woodford, within the London Borough of Redbridge. Wherever you are in Seven Kings, the process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, furniture made in our workshop and fitting in your home. Seven Kings is one of the places in Redbridge where we make TV and media units, and the borough has 18 places on our list.

Design visits and fitting in IG3, IG2 and IG1 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You’ll find streets here such as New Road, Lynn Road and High Road, and we cover homes on all of them for TV and media units. Flats, conversions and lettings

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

From workshop to your room

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there’s some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It is useful to let us know about parking at the measuring visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. It starts with a short note from you about the TV wall.
  2. We visit to plan the unit and check the way in. Let us know about parking too, since a van may need a visitor permit or a paid bay.
  3. A written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop we make the unit in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring the sections in, join them on the wall and scribe them to fit.

Before we arrive

  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
