About our TV and media units in Ilford
Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, behind the screen or inside a cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. It is best done before we fit, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. Typical reasons to get in touch are somewhere to keep games tidy and a cabinet that traps heat; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In streets where so much of the housing went up before 1919, as it did around Ilford, plenty of living rooms are two reception rooms knocked into one, each with its own chimney breast. That can mean one pair of alcoves for shelving and the other for low cupboards, with the screen on a chimney breast between. Older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick, which changes how shelving is fixed.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

FAQs: TV and media units in Ilford
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Ilford?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
My home in Ilford is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
How long will the fitting take?
The fitting depends on the size of the unit and the cable routes planned into it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. Leases vary, and some need consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it’s worth checking before fitting day.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.
Will you paint the walls around the furniture?
No. Plastering and decorating are not part of our work. The furniture itself is spray painted or hand painted.

Shelves
Open shelves suit speakers and things you want on show.
Birch plywood
We often use birch plywood for carcasses and drawers that stand up to daily use. Its layered edge can be painted or shown.
How fitting day works
Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is usually only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so TV and media units are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.
- You contact us with details of the room, the TV and your equipment.
- We visit to measure, note the sockets and agree where everything will go. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
- You receive a quote setting out the layout and the paint finish.
- The unit is built in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
Arranging a design visit
It is useful to see the room before we come. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space, along with rough measurements. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Living-room storage in Ilford
The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Ilford were built before 1919 (about 58%) and since 2000 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for TV and media units, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Ilford include Chapel (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-west, and Baptist Church and Institute (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Controlled parking zones are run by the boroughs, so the rules in Redbridge are set locally. If your road in Ilford falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.

When you need someone else
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Setting up and tuning the TV, boxes and speakers
- Painting the walls and ceiling
- Aerial, satellite or broadband installation

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.
Why people ask for TV and media units in Ilford
Open-plan living is another reason. A built-in unit gives that wall order.
Some of the things we are asked to solve include:
- A TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall
- Wasted space around the screen
- Boxes and consoles on the floor
- Games, controllers and remotes everywhere
If your home is one of the older houses near St Alban's Church, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.
