How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. The sections made in our workshop come in next. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the TV wall and what it needs to hold, and your quote sets out the fitting days. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You get in touch about a built-in TV unit, and where the sockets are now.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the wall and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. Any new sockets are a job for your electrician.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The unit is made in our workshop, with cable routes and vents built in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the walls and ready for your equipment. A hand-painted finish is done on site, if you chose one.

How to get a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, use our contact form.

TV and media units in Earlsfield

Speakers need their own thought. A soundbar usually sits just below the TV, while larger speakers suit open shelves at the sides. Speakers work best in the open rather than behind closed doors, so we plan open spaces for them. Most enquiries start with set-top boxes stacked on a stand and alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

Victorian and Edwardian houses were built with solid brick outside walls, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Earlsfield date from before 1919, the wall type is checked before any fixing for TV and media units is chosen. Lath and plaster needs a lighter touch and the right fixings, particularly behind loaded shelves.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

A bespoke unit is not instant: it needs a design visit, a quote and workshop time. For a short stay, a standalone stand can make more sense. Standard furniture is drawn for modern rooms, so its proportions can look odd in a tall period room, whereas fitted pieces can pick up the room’s height and mouldings.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Built-in living-room furniture in Earlsfield

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Earlsfield were built before 1919 (about 65%) and since 2000 (about 12%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. The centre of Earlsfield is within about a quarter of a mile of the Magdalen Park Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 31% of households in the neighbourhood around Earlsfield live in terraced houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Terraced houses in London often have alcoves beside a chimney breast, and TV and media units are made to those widths.

For a flat near Earlsfield station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For families living near Beatrix Potter Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. Near listed buildings like Church of St Andrew, less than half a mile south of the centre of Earlsfield, older homes may keep original joinery that TV and media units can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Flats, conversions and lettings

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, which is worth sorting early. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Questions from Earlsfield

Do you cover homes near Earlsfield station?

Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Does a conservation area in or near Earlsfield affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Your electrician does that. It is best done before the unit goes in and we design the cable routes around the sockets.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

How do you hide the TV cables?

Cable routes are built into the design, with access panels for later changes. Where the cables meet the wall depends on where the sockets are.

Looking after your furniture

Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:

  • Let us know about access early
  • Note the size of each box and speaker
  • Measure your TV, or the size you expect to buy next
  • Look at what the equipment makers say about airflow

After setting up, check that the boxes are not getting too warm. Keep vents, gaps and open backs clear of cables and clutter.

Keep ventilation gaps and open backs clear when you add equipment.
