Need TV and media units in Roundshaw?

From workshop to your room

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Walls in older homes are rarely flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room and your equipment, including the size of the screen.
  2. We come to measure, note the sockets and agree the layout.
  3. We send a quote in writing for the unit, ready for you to check.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the measurements we took, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We install the unit, leaving the cable routes and vents clear. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway

How to get a quote

To make a start, message us from the contact page and tell us a little about the room. We then arrange a design visit to measure and discuss the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

TV and media units in Roundshaw

A built-in TV wall often needs sockets in new places, like behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it is done before the unit goes in. If you are living with alcoves either side of the chimney breast going to waste and a TV that looks out of place in the room, that’s what TV and media units are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

A large number of homes around Roundshaw date from 2000 onwards, and in a newer home the living space is typically open-plan, without a chimney breast. That means TV and media units often create the structure of the room, framing a screen or running a full wall. Plasterboard stud walls are common in newer homes, so heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

The problems TV and media units solve

A new, larger TV often prompts it. The old stand looks too small, or the screen dominates the wall. Shelves and cupboards around the screen make it sit better in the room.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Somewhere to keep games tidy
  • Cables trailing across the wall
  • A TV that looks out of place in the room
  • Space for a soundbar and speakers

For an older house near St. Paul's, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Have they thought about parking near you?
  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

What it costs

What you pay depends on:

  • The width and height of the space
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking and unloading on your street

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Tell us about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting in touch

To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • How you want to use the space
  • Your postcode and the borough

If you know what you want, say so; if you do not, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Could you do it yourself?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is quick to buy.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Questions from Roundshaw

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Wallington station?

Yes. We cover all of Sutton and the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.

Do TV units need ventilation?

Ventilation is designed in wherever equipment sits, with open backs, gaps or openings. Each box should have its own space, and it’s worth checking the maker’s guidance on clearances.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I choose the paint colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

For carcasses and drawer boxes, birch plywood is hard-wearing that stand up to daily use. The edge can be painted or left as a detail.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers suit games, controllers and remotes. Fronts are painted to match the unit.
