How we make TV and media units for Cheam

Hiding the cables is often the main aim. Cable routes are built into the design from the start, with openings and removable panels so you can add or swap leads later. The routes are ours, while any wiring is for your electrician. We make TV and media units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a tangle of wires behind the TV and nowhere good for speakers.

A good part of the housing around Cheam is interwar, semi-detached or detached. In a typical 1930s house, the front room has a bay at one end and a chimney breast with an alcove to either side, which decides where TV and media units sit. Walls are often truer than in older houses, but they’re still measured carefully and scribed where they wander.

The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

What affects the cost of TV and media units

The price reflects the time and materials the job needs. That depends on:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Parking near your home
  • Spray painting or hand painting

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Before the design visit

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • What the furniture needs to hold

We quote once we’ve seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

How fitting day works

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You contact us with a short note about the room and the unit you have in mind.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it is useful to have them in mind early.
  3. You receive a quote in writing setting out the unit, materials and finish, ready for you to check.
  4. The unit is made at our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. We fit it in your home, with the cable routes ready to use.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How to get a quote

A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough sizes and some photos if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Advice

Is bespoke worth it?

An off-the-shelf TV stand is cheaper and quick to buy. A stand is also simple to swap when technology moves on. A built-in unit is planned for your room and your equipment. If a house has been extended or knocked through, the new walls and the old ones may not line up, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Fitted pieces are scribed to both.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

How do I get a quote?

It is easiest to send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

We plan the route in during the design visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

How much will my TV unit cost?

Each room is quoted on its own: size, internal fittings, the finish and how awkward the walls are all play a part. The written quote follows the design visit.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Cheam homes and TV and media units

In the streets around Cheam, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 31%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Cheam include St Andrew's United Reformed Church (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Church of St John (Grade II), under half a mile south-east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Red routes are run by TfL, with tight limits on where and when vehicles can stop. If your home in Cheam is on or near a main road, tell us at the measuring visit. Then we can work out where to load and unload.

Nonsuch Mansion, about 1 mile north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. If you live in a period home close to Church of St Andrew, picture rails and cornices give TV and media units a line to finish at. For a flat near Cheam station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.

When is bespoke worth it?

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot normally do that in an older room.
