Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls.

How we make wall beds for Acton Green

A wall bed needs clear space in front of it to fold down, so we plan the layout with that in mind. We think about where a chair, rug or desk will go, so the bed can come down without a shuffle. People normally come to us about a guest room that sits empty most of the time and a playroom that can sleep visitors; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

In a Victorian bedroom, the chimney breast normally sits on a side wall, with a recess to each side. That layout is worth knowing around Acton Green, where a large share of homes were built before 1919. Fitted furniture can fill both recesses and bridge the chimney breast with high cupboards. Any capped chimney is kept ventilated.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How we price wall beds

What you pay depends on:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • The width and height of the space
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside

Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Before the design visit

A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:

  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth
  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

The design visit is where every quote starts. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing, so you can take your time with it. To arrange the visit, use our contact form.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bed and the cabinets around it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You let us know about the room.
  2. At the design visit we agree the layout and the colour.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood; a spray finish is applied there for a smooth, even surface.
  5. We fit everything in your home and check the bed lowers and lifts smoothly. New paint needs gentle use while it cures.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Plan where chairs and desks will sit
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Mention if the wall is a stud wall

Small marks on a hand-painted finish can be touched up. Spray-painted finishes clean easily with a soft cloth and keep their smooth look.

If you know the wall’s construction, mention it. The fixing depends on the wall, and we check it at the design visit too.

Common questions about wall beds

Is parking a problem for fitting in Acton Green?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

How do you fit wall beds in a flat in Acton Green?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Wall beds are built in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. We scribe the edges to follow the wall and set the furniture level on adjustable feet or a plinth.

Acton Green homes and wall beds

In the neighbourhood around Acton Green, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 51%) and the years since 2000 (about 22%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. The Acton Green Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Acton Green. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If in doubt, the council’s planning team can confirm. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If you live on or close to a main road in Acton Green, let us know at the measuring visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Near listed buildings like Church of St Michael and All Angels, about 0.5 miles south-east of the centre of Acton Green, older homes may keep original joinery that wall beds can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. Hogarth's House, about 0.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design.
