Under-stairs storage in South Acton
About our under-stairs storage in South Acton
In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. We can make plain or panelled fronts, painted to sit with the walls or to stand out. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about a low corner too deep to reach into and a staircase with untidy space beneath it.
Homes in an area like South Acton can come from many different periods, and so do the tricky corners, from bays and stairs to halls and eaves. Under-stairs cupboards are designed for the space you have. Meters, fuse boards and boilers keep the access they need.
You get the quote in writing, so there is time to read it properly and share it with anyone else involved. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

Under-stairs storage for homes in South Acton
Homes built before 1919 make up about 41% of the housing in the neighbourhood around South Acton, with about 26% built since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of South Acton include Gunnersbury House (Grade II), under half a mile south-east, and Archway at East End of Terrace (Grade II), less than half a mile south-east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, may need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. The share of homes built before 1919 around South Acton, about 41%, is well above the figure for Hounslow as a whole, about 16%, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of under-stairs cupboards.
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of All Saints, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage. If you live near Gunnersbury Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place. For a flat near South Acton station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

How fitting day works
You won’t need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and the room should already be cleared. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift along with the room itself, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.
- You get in touch and tell us a little about the space under your stairs.
- At the design visit we measure under the stairs and plan the drawers and doors with you, keeping the meters and fuse board easy to reach.
- We send a quote in writing setting out the design, materials and finish, for you to read through.
- Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to the colour you chose. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls.
Preparing the room
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Arranging a design visit
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To get started, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flats, blocks and rented homes
Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Common questions about under-stairs storage
My home in South Acton is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?
At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Is South Acton in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. South Acton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Hounslow and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, but it’s useful to be around at the end.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
How do I get a quote?
Just message us from the contact page. Rough measurements and a few pictures help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
When you need someone else
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- New sockets, lights or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How it’s made
Pull-out drawers
Deep drawers on runners let you use the low end of the space without crawling in. We size each drawer for what you plan to keep in it. Many designs use a run of drawers stepping down with the stairs.
Birch plywood
We use birch plywood where strength matters, as it is strong and holds screws firmly. Drawer boxes and carcasses that take a load are often made from it. The layered edge can be left on show or painted.
