Under-stairs storage for homes in Coombe
Under-stairs storage isn’t only for houses. Maisonettes, split-level flats and homes with stairs down to a lower floor often have usable space beneath the steps. We measure the space and the route in, so the sections made at our workshop fit through the front door and along the hall. Wherever your home is in Coombe, the process is the same. We make under-stairs cupboards from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are storage that doesn’t match the hallway and coats and shoes piling up in the hall.
A good share of the homes around Coombe were built between 1945 and the early 1970s. Homes from that era tend to have simpler shapes than older houses, with fewer recesses, which means under-stairs cupboards can add storage that was never built in. The fixings are chosen for the wall, whether it’s concrete, blockwork or brick.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Under-stairs storage in Coombe: local notes
About 43% of the homes in the streets around Coombe went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 36% between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how under-stairs cupboards are fixed and fitted. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Coombe include Lodge to Combe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Coombe House (st Margaret's School) (Grade II), under half a mile west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. So any van that delivers or fits furniture in Coombe is covered by it. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.
If you live in a period home close to Church Hall United Reformed Church Of St Paul, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. Close to Addington Hills? Under-stairs cupboards can be designed to hold outdoor kit, from walking boots to picnic things. If you live in a flat close to South Croydon station, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Pricing under-stairs storage in Coombe
Not every room costs the same, for these reasons:
- The number of doors and drawers
- Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Parking near your home
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.
What we need to know
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
Rough sizes are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, get in touch through our contact form. The written quote follows the visit.
Common questions about under-stairs storage
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Coombe?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Is Coombe in the area you cover for under-stairs storage?
Yes. Coombe is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Croydon and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
What if my walls and floors are out of level?
Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.
How long is the fitting for under-stairs storage?
How long fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Drawers, doors and carcasses are all made in the workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can need listed building consent, so ask the council’s conservation officer.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, particularly with rough sizes. You can send them when you send us a few details through our contact form.
Where other trades come in
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Plastering and decorating around the new storage
- Altering or cutting into the stairs
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.
What it’s made from
- Pull-out drawers
- Spray-painted finish
- Hand-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Moisture-resistant MDF
Materials and finishes
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish can be applied once the storage is in place. It’s easy to touch up later. Like any new paint, it needs time to cure fully.
Spray-painted finish
Spraying gives a smooth, even surface. We spray in the workshop, so the finish is complete before fitting. The colour is agreed with you.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Standard storage is built for a level floor and a square space, and the space under a staircase is neither. A ready-made unit tends to leave gaps at the slope and wasted space at the back. Bespoke storage is designed and cut to the shape of your stairs. It is a bigger investment than a flat-pack unit, and the return is in the space it uses. Post-war rooms are often compact, and standard furniture sizes waste space at the ends and the top, which fitted furniture uses. Every width is made for the room.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

What happens on fitting day
The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Estates sometimes have their own parking rules alongside the council’s, so let us know what applies at the measuring visit. On the day, the sections are carried in, assembled and fixed. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.
- It starts when you contact us about the space under your stairs.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space.
- A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. Take your time to look through it.
- Your storage is built in our workshop, cut to the angle of your stairs.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Preparing the room
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
How to get a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.
