Built-in Bookshelves in Addiscombe

Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. We make built-in bookshelves for homes in Addiscombe, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Bare walls that could hold shelving
  • Books piled on the floor
  • Shelves deep enough for large books

How we make built-in bookshelves for Addiscombe

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks need much less depth than hardbacks, art books or records. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. People typically come to us about storage for children’s books and games and books piled on the floor; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Across London, neighbouring streets can be decades apart in age, and a wall might be brick, lath and plaster, blockwork or plasterboard. That’s why every wall is checked at the design visit before the fixings are chosen. If your room has a chimney breast, the alcoves are an obvious place for built-in bookshelves; if not, a full wall works well.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone bookcases cost less and you can have them straight away. You can take them to your next home. Fitted shelving is made for one wall and stays with the house. Standard widths and heights seldom suit an actual room, which leaves gaps at the sides and wasted space on top. Fitted furniture is made to the room.

Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Why us?

Questions we are often asked

Is parking a problem for fitting in Addiscombe?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

Do you make built-in bookshelves for homes in Addiscombe?

Yes. We cover all of Croydon and the rest of London, and Addiscombe is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, and then we send a quote.

How do you stop shelves from sagging?

Shelves are sized for their span, depth and the weight they’ll carry. For long runs, we use a thicker shelf, a front lip or a support, often in birch plywood. Mention anything very heavy when we plan.

What affects the price of built-in bookshelves?

Every job is priced for its room: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. The written quote follows the design visit.

Do you move sockets or add lighting?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.

Do I need the building owner’s consent?

Possibly. Some leases need the building owner’s consent before you make alterations. Check your lease, as we cannot advise on it.

What it is made from

Shelves

For a long shelf, we use a thicker board, a lip on the front or a support. Shorter bays are another answer.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood carcasses make a rigid bookcase that fixes securely to the wall.

How fitting works for built-in bookshelves

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, each piece is fitted to the room’s own walls, scribed where walls bow and levelled where floors slope. Hand painting can happen on site, while spray-painted pieces come ready from the workshop.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with the shelf spans in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. We then make the bookcase in our workshop.
  5. We bring it to your home and fit it in place. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

Before fitting day

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to

How to get a quote

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, then send a quote in writing. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.

Built-in living-room furniture in Addiscombe

About 44% of the homes in the streets around Addiscombe went up before 1919, and about 27% between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for built-in bookshelves, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Addiscombe include Church of St Mildred (Grade II), under half a mile south-west, and Addiscombe Farm Cottage (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-west. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For families living near Oasis Academy Shirley Park, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. Close to Ashburton Park? A room that looks out on trees deserves a design that leaves the window alone. If you live in a flat close to Norwood Junction station, built-in bookshelves are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

What we don’t do

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Moving sockets or switches, which needs an electrician
  • Moving a radiator, which is a plumber’s job
  • Knocking through or altering walls

If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.
