Under-stairs storage in Bow

Under-stairs storage for homes in Bow

Pull-out drawers make the most of the low, deep end of the space. Instead of crawling in to find something, you slide the drawer out and everything is in view. At the tall end, a cupboard works well for coats, an ironing board or the vacuum. A mix of drawers and cupboards is often the best use of the space. We make under-stairs cupboards from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about needing a compact spot for a laptop and a tired under-stairs cupboard that stands out.

Newer homes tend to have finished floors that scratch easily, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Bow were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the under-stairs cupboard designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Could you do it yourself?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.

Questions from Bow

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Hackney Wick station?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Does a conservation area in or near Bow affect fitted furniture?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How long will the fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is built in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the hallway as clear as we can while we work.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

What under-stairs storage can’t fix

Not everything around under-stairs storage is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:

  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage

Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it’s made from

  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Spray-painted finish

Fitting day, step by step

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the lift and doors.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what’s under the stairs now, including any gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. We make it in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a door or panel left where the meters need access.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

Ask for a quote

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Tell us about them at the design visit.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.

Making use of tricky spaces in Bow

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Bow were built since 2000 (about 44%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 20%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Bow include Phoenix School (Grade II*), less than half a mile south, and Church of St Mary Stratford Bow (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles east. For a listed home, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Tower Hamlets included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Bow. Access and parking are talked through during the design visit.

The wider area includes historic houses like Sutton House, about 1.6 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live near Grove Hall Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and under-stairs cupboards can give those things a place.

Is it time for under-stairs storage?

A hallway full of shoes and coats is a common reason to get in touch. A coat and shoe section under the stairs keeps the floor clear and the door easy to open, and the family has an obvious place to put things.

Most of the enquiries we get are about needs like these:

  • A low corner too deep to reach into
  • Needing a compact spot for a laptop
  • Nowhere to put coats, shoes and bags
  • An under-stairs cupboard full of clutter

If you live in a period home close to St Paul Old Ford, the cupboard door under a period staircase can be kept or replaced to match the new storage.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
