Under-stairs storage in Wapping
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
A standard unit knows nothing about your meter or fuse board. Fitted in front of one, it can make access tricky for readings and safety checks. Bespoke storage is planned around them from the start. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
Why choose us
- Saturday work by prior arrangement
- Edges scribed to follow your walls
- A design visit, then a quote in writing
- Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose

How we make under-stairs storage for Wapping
We make each under-stairs cupboard in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits drawer boxes that carry weight, and MDF gives the doors and fronts a smooth surface for paint. The finish is sprayed or hand-painted, and then the storage is fitted in your home in Wapping. If your home has a fuse board that’s hard to get to and a dark, wasted space under the stairs, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand can solve it.
A large number of homes around Wapping date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes rarely come with much storage. Halls, landings and the space beneath the stairs are where fitted storage can help. Plasterboard stud walls are common, so fixings go into the studs or use fixings made for the board.
The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Questions from Wapping
I live in a flat in Wapping. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It’s useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Wapping?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
How do I get started?
Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. Rough sizes and a few photos help, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.
How is the furniture painted?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
What happens at the design visit?
It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
Looking after your furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Mention any parking rules on your street
- Let us know if the hall is being decorated
- Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
- Consider the colour of the hall, the stairs and the skirting
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. Any door to a meter or fuse board is checked so it opens fully and leaves the meter in view. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.
Keep the way to the meter or fuse board clear. You may need to reach them yourself in a hurry, so leave the path open. A dedicated door makes this easy to keep up.
Fitting day, step by step
Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, closing the gaps a standard unit would leave. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. Each piece is levelled and fixed to suit plasterboard or block. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.
- You let us know about the space under the stairs.
- At the design visit we measure and plan how you will use the space.
- A quote in writing follows.
- We make the drawers and cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The storage is fitted and finished, and we check each pull-out with you before we leave.
- Treat the fresh paintwork gently while it cures; a hand-painted finish is easy to touch up later.
Before fitting day
- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
Starting with a design visit
A quote begins with some details from you: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you are ready, send us a few details through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.

Where other trades come in
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe registered engineer
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How we price under-stairs storage
Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. This is what makes the difference:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
- The width and height of the space
In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension near your home. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so we can plan for it.
What we need to know
A little information at the start saves time later. If you can, send:
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
- Approximate measurements of the space

Under-stairs storage in Wapping: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around Wapping were built since 2000 (about 37%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 29%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. 21 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Wapping. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 80% of households in the neighbourhood around Wapping live in purpose-built flats, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Peter, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If your children go to St Mellitus College or a school nearby, under-stairs cupboards can give school bags, shoes and sports kit a proper home. If you live in a period home close to St Peter's, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight.
