Under-stairs storage in Hackney Wick, Tower Hamlets

Thinking about under-stairs storage in Hackney Wick? It starts with a design visit to measure and talk through ideas, then a written quote, before anything is made.

  • Struggling to reach the gas or electricity meter
  • Storage that does not match the hallway
  • A staircase with untidy space beneath it

When is bespoke worth it?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

How we make under-stairs storage for Hackney Wick

In many terraced houses, the gas meter, electricity meter or fuse board sits under the stairs. These must stay easy to reach for meter readers and engineers. We plan the storage around them, normally with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so the space works hard without hiding anything that matters. If you’re not sure what’s under your stairs in Hackney Wick, we will look when we visit. Most enquiries start with a fuse board that’s hard to get to and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Floors in newer homes are often finished and easy to mark, so we cover them while we work. Many homes around Hackney Wick were built since 2000, and stud walls there take fixings chosen for the board. Skirting can be scribed around, or the storage can sit on its own plinth.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the under-stairs cupboard we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and it is what the workshop builds to.

When you need someone else

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Reshaping or rebuilding the staircase
  • Plastering and decorating around the new storage

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How it works.

What goes into it

  • Coat hooks and shoe shelves
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Pull-out drawers
  • Spray-painted finish

How fitting works for under-stairs storage

Getting everything level comes first. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Newer homes often have finished floors, painted walls and new doors that mark easily, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch.
  2. At the design visit, we look at the stairs, the hall and what you need to store, and check where the meters and fuse board sit.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish. Take your time to look through it.
  4. We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready to use.

Before we arrive

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.

Advice

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standard drawer units are made in fixed sizes that rarely match the depth under the stairs. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Newer homes often have compact rooms where standard furniture leaves awkward gaps, and fitted furniture uses that space. It can also be planned around boxed-in pipes and risers.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

Practical tips

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Check whether your meters or fuse board are under the stairs
  • Think about what you’ll keep in each drawer
  • Measure your vacuum cleaner and ironing board
  • Clear the space before the design visit if you can

If the hallway is being decorated afterwards, ask your decorator to protect the fronts. Masking tape can lift fresh paint, so it shouldn’t go on the new finish. If anything isn’t right, message us from the contact page and we’ll talk it through.

Wet coats and shoes can mark paint and leave damp in a closed cupboard. It’s best to let them dry before closing the door on them, and air the cupboard if it feels damp.

Common questions about under-stairs storage

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hackney Wick?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

I live near Hackney Wick station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Tower Hamlets and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.

Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?

Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.

Can you fit a small desk under the stairs?

In many homes it is possible, if the space is open to a room and tall enough at one end. We can build a desk with shelves and drawers to suit the space. Any socket or light there is for your electrician, and we plan around it.
