Under-stairs storage designed for your room

Under-stairs storage for homes in Bromley

In some homes the stairs rise from the living room or kitchen, so the storage beneath them is on show. Here the doors, drawer fronts and finish matter as much as the storage behind them. Fronts can be plain or panelled, with handles chosen to suit the room. The result should look like part of the house, not an afterthought. If you are living with a dark, wasted space under the stairs and an old cupboard door that doesn’t suit the hall, under-stairs cupboards made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.

Newer homes often have plain spaces left as they are: a recess beside the stairs, a gap by a window, an empty cupboard. Many homes around Bromley date from 2000 onwards, so spaces like that are worth a second look. The layout inside is planned to use the full depth.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

Questions we’re often asked

Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Bromley?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Bromley?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can under-stairs storage work around the fuse board?

Yes. Meters and fuse boards often sit under the stairs, and they need to stay accessible. We note them at the measuring visit and plan the drawers and doors around them. We don’t move meters, so the storage works around their current position.

How much does under-stairs storage cost?

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. The size of the space, the number of drawers and doors, and the finish all shape the price. For a quote, message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit.

What happens when you come to measure?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking, and a quote in writing follows.

My walls are not straight. Is that a problem?

Walls and floors that aren’t true are part of the job in older homes. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Why bespoke in Bromley?

If you only need a hook or two and a basic shelf, an off-the-shelf option may be enough. Bespoke storage makes sense when you want every part of the space working, not just the easy part. We are happy to talk through which suits you at the design visit. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, whereas fitted furniture can define each part of the room.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

We trim scribe strips to the exact line of the wall. They’re one reason fitted storage looks built in. The plinth at the bottom does the same job at the floor.

Spray-painted finish

For a crisp, even look, many people choose a spray-painted finish. We apply it in our workshop, and the paint needs time to cure fully once it is fitted.

What happens on fitting day

With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the space and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Parking at newer developments can be restricted, with private bays or loading areas, so let us know what applies at the design visit. The furniture comes in sections and is fixed in place. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. To begin, fill in our short enquiry form; a brief note on the space and what it holds now is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the slope and the floor, and agree a design that keeps any meter or fuse board accessible.
  3. You receive a quote in writing for the storage.
  4. The storage is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with access to the meters planned in.
  5. The storage is fitted and set level, and the meter access is checked with you.

Getting ready for fitting day

Under-stairs storage for homes in Bromley

In the streets around Bromley, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 52%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for under-stairs cupboards, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Near the centre of Bromley, Historic England’s list includes Tide Mill (known As the House Mill) (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and The Widow's Son Public House (Grade II*), less than half a mile south. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It’s worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. About 83% of households in the neighbourhood around Bromley live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Sutton House, about 2.2 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. If you live in a period home close to Bow Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. For a flat near West Ham station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so tell us about it during the design visit.

When you need someone else

Some parts of a job need another trade, such as an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • Gas pipework, which needs a Gas Safe engineer
  • Moving a gas or electricity meter, which is arranged through your energy supplier
  • Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
