What affects the price in Clapham
We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:
- How big the furniture is
- The internal fittings
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, then set it out in the quote.
What we need to know
You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It is enough to send:
- Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What the furniture needs to hold
Getting a quote starts with some details: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. When you are ready, get in touch through our contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a written quote.
Under-stairs storage in Clapham: what you get
Some under-stairs spaces are open enough for a small desk. A built-in desk with shelving and drawers can turn the space into a quiet corner for paperwork. Any new socket or light there is for your electrician, and we leave room and a route for the cable. We will look at whether it suits your stairs when we visit in Clapham. If you’re living with nowhere to keep the vacuum and ironing board and a sloping corner nobody can reach, under-stairs cupboards made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A large share of the homes around Clapham were built before 1919, and older houses have plenty of odd corners: under the stairs, in the bay, along the hall and under the eaves of a converted loft. That’s where fitted storage comes in, made to follow walls that are seldom true.
If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. The quote itself covers our work, from the design to the materials and finish.

Common questions about under-stairs storage
Will a conservation area stop me having under-stairs storage fitted in Clapham?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
I live near Clapham High Street station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.
Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?
Yes. The colour is your choice and is agreed in the quote. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Both can be matched to a colour you already have.
Should I choose drawers or cupboards under the stairs?
The answer depends on your stairs and what you’ll keep there. Pull-out drawers suit the low, deep end, as they bring the back within reach. At the tall end, a cupboard is often better for coats and the vacuum.
Do you move sockets or add lighting?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We will design around them.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps to avoid condensation. Any damp needs sorting by the right specialist before fitting.
Storage in Clapham homes: local notes
In the neighbourhood around Clapham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 129 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Clapham. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. About 54% of households in the area around Clapham live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, under-stairs cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If you live in a flat close to Clapham High Street station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If you live in a period home close to St Paul's Church, under-stairs cupboards are scribed to walls and stair strings that are rarely straight. If your children go to Clapham Manor Primary School or a school nearby, a place for each person’s coat and shoes stops the hallway filling up.

How fitting day works
When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. The sections made in our workshop come in next, one at a time. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.
- You get in touch with some details and, if you like, a sketch.
- We visit to measure and talk about how you will use the space.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- We make the drawers, doors and carcasses in our workshop.
- The storage is fitted and set level, ready for the first coats and shoes, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
Before we arrive
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
Ask for a quote
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

What under-stairs storage cannot fix
Before you plan the job, it’s useful to know what we don’t do:
- Electrical work under the stairs, which your electrician carries out
- Any work on gas pipes or appliances
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can message us from the contact page and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.
What it is made from
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Hand-painted finish
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Pull-out drawers
Before and after fitting day
These points come up often when people plan under-stairs storage. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:
- Let us know about parking at the design visit
- Clear the space before the design visit if you can
- Plan decorating around the fitting
- Think about what you will keep in each drawer
We run each drawer and open each door with you before we go. If there’s a meter or fuse board, we make sure its door opens fully and the meter is easy to see. That way, nothing is left for you to sort out later.
Check now and then that handles and hinges are tight. Tightening a screw early stops a small looseness becoming a problem. If a door drops or a drawer starts to catch, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us what’s happening.
Could you do it yourself?
The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.
