Alcove units in Clapham

We fit alcove units across Lambeth and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote, and once you’re happy the units are made at our workshop and fitted in your home. Typical reasons to get in touch are bowed walls and sloping floors and somewhere to keep books and records, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Older houses tend to come with picture rails, tall skirtings and cornices, and alcove units need to meet those lines neatly. A large share of the housing around Clapham went up before 1919, so those details are worth looking at closely at the measuring visit. The top line can stop at the rail or run on to the cornice, depending on the room.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Why people ask for alcove units in Clapham

For some, it’s about books, records or a TV. We can plan an alcove unit around exactly what you have, with shelf heights and depths to suit.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Shop-bought shelving that does not fill the recess
  • Everyday clutter left on show
  • Bowed walls and sloping floors
  • A desk that tucks into an alcove

For a family home near Clapham Manor Primary School, a cupboard for board games and a shelf for reading books can go into the same design.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How parking will work on your street
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure

How to choose a carpenter in London

Looking after your furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple with a little care. A few things help it stay looking good:

  • Check whether there is a vent in the chimney breast
  • Talk to your electrician early if you want new sockets
  • Let us know about stairs, parking and access early
  • Bring the sizes of anything that has to fit in the cupboards

Keep any chimney vent clear once the units are in. Air moving through the chimney helps keep damp away.

Use a mat under plants, vases and drinks to stop rings and water marks on the paint. Wipe up spills right away.

FAQs: alcove units in Clapham

Is parking a problem for fitting in Clapham?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.

My house in Clapham is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do both alcove units have to match?

It is entirely your choice. Alcoves are often different widths anyway, so each unit is made to its own measurements. They can match in style while doing different jobs.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.

How do I get a quote?

The first step is to fill in our short enquiry form and tell us about the room. We then arrange a design visit, measure up and send a written quote.

Do you work in Clapham?

Yes. Clapham is part of the area we cover, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Fitting day, step by step

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size and number of units, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Fixings into older walls are made carefully, as lath and plaster can crack if treated roughly. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the alcoves is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure the alcoves, go through the design and check the route from the street to the room. It is useful to tell us then about parking, as much of London is in a controlled parking zone.
  3. We then send a quote in writing for the units.
  4. In our workshop we build the units from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, sized so each piece gets up the stairs and round the corners.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them in the alcoves and scribe them to the walls.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

Arranging a design visit

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Advice

Could you do it yourself?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Honest limits

Not everything around alcove units is carpentry, such as an electrician, a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:

  • Plastering or repairing loose plaster in the alcoves
  • Taking out a chimney breast or opening up a fireplace
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Built-in living-room furniture in Clapham

Homes built before 1919 make up about 45% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Clapham, with about 21% built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Clapham is partly covered by the Rectory Grove Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Lambeth included. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Clapham, as it does anywhere else in London. Access and parking are talked through at the measuring visit.

The wider area includes historic houses such as Carlyle's House, about 1.9 miles north-west. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for alcove units. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Paul, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

Clapham is within the London Borough of Lambeth, about 1 mile east of Stockwell. Whether your home in Clapham is a terraced house, a flat or a newer build, the furniture is designed around the room as we find it. Our Lambeth coverage includes Clapham, along with the rest of the borough.

In SW4, SW8 and SW9, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets such as Grafton Square, Clapham High Street and Houghton Square, for alcove units and any of our other fitted furniture. The B224 and B303 runs close to Clapham; on busy main roads, unloading alcove units takes a little planning. We also cover Stockwell (1 mile east), Little Portugal (1 mile north-east), Clapham Park (1 mile south), South Lambeth (1 mile north-east) and Brixton (1 mile south-east). We also make alcove units in nearby places like Streatham (3 miles south), West Norwood (3 miles south-east), South Bank (3 miles north), Loughborough Junction (2 miles east), Waterloo (3 miles north-east) and Vauxhall (2 miles north-east).

Our area takes in the homes around The Bread and Roses pub, Lambeth Academy and Trinity Academy, among other places. There’s a railway station in Clapham itself: Clapham High Street station. A little further out are Soseki Museum (a few minutes’ walk west) and Battersea General Hospital (1.3 miles north-west). For a walk, there’s Battersea Park Lake.
