Under-stairs storage in Stockwell
Under-stairs cupboards often hold a gas meter, an electricity meter or the fuse board. They need to stay accessible, so readings and safety checks can still be made. We plan the storage around them, normally with a door that leaves them in clear reach, so you gain storage without losing access. If you’re not sure what’s under your stairs in Stockwell, we will look when we visit. If your home has a meter or fuse board buried behind clutter and needing a compact spot for a laptop, that is what under-stairs cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
In a block, the lift, the corridors and the door to the flat set the size of each section. Most households around Stockwell live in purpose-built flats, so under-stairs cupboards are drawn in sections from the start. Floors in the corridor and the flat are covered on the way in.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

How it’s made
Doors and drawer fronts
We make the fronts from moisture-resistant MDF and finish them in the colour you choose. Their edges are cut to follow the angle of the stairs, so the gaps stay even all the way along.
Birch plywood
Drawers under the stairs often carry heavy things, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Birch plywood suits them, as it is strong and holds screws well. It also suits longer shelves.
FAQs: under-stairs storage in Stockwell
Can you make under-stairs storage for a home in Stockwell?
Yes. Stockwell is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Lambeth and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Stockwell?
It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
What does an under-stairs cupboard cost?
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The mix of drawers, doors and shelves, and the finish you choose, all play a part. Everything is set out in a written quote after the visit.
Is it possible to match the colour of my hallway?
Yes. You choose the colour, and we agree it before the work starts. We can spray it in the workshop or hand-paint it in your home. Either finish can follow a colour already in the hall.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so tell us about it at the measuring visit.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.
How fitting day works
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the measuring visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. The time the fitting takes depends on the shape of the space and the number of drawers and doors, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. We plan the day to suit those rules. Saturday work is by prior arrangement where the building permits it.
- It starts when you contact us with a few details about the space.
- We come to measure, note any meters or fuse boards and talk through the design.
- A written quote follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out.
- Your storage is made at our workshop and painted to the colour you chose. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit it in your home, scribed to the stairs and the walls. Any meters stay easy to reach.

- Let us know where the boiler and meters are
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall

When you need someone else
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:
- Making good the walls and ceiling, which is for a plasterer or decorator
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Structural changes to the staircase itself
Not sure whether your space suits under-stairs storage? You can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.
What it is made from
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hand-painted finish
- Coat hooks and shoe shelves
- Pull-out drawers
Is bespoke worth it?
Ready-made drawers come in set depths, and the space under a staircase is often deeper than any of them. Bespoke drawers are made to the depth you have, so the back of the space is used too. Each one is sized for what it will hold, from shoes to the vacuum cleaner. Off-the-shelf furniture is sized for an average room, and flats are rarely average, leaving gaps or crowding a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.
What you get with us

Under-stairs storage in Stockwell: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 36% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Stockwell, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The Stockwell Green Conservation Area is close by, within about a quarter of a mile of the centre of Stockwell. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. Your council can advise if you’re unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. Where a home in Stockwell is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Carlyle's House, about 2.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks. Living in a block of flats near Brixton station? Then it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live in a period home close to St. Andrew's, the triangle under an old staircase is often deeper than it looks.
