Fitted wardrobes in Clapham: what you get
What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers are arranged around what you own. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. Most enquiries start with standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and a room too narrow for hinged doors; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
With a large share of homes around Clapham built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Cold external walls can lead to condensation, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture is part of the design. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

How fitting day works
In older rooms, the furniture usually has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it is useful to tell us during the design visit what’s outside. Unloading is kept short, with sections taken straight inside. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- We come to measure and talk through the design, including the doors and the finish.
- We send a written quote.
- The wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Empty the space we’ll be working in
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
Getting a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
How it is made
Moisture-resistant MDF
MDF has no grain, so painted doors look smooth and even. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted wardrobes.
Hand-painted finish
A hand-painted finish suits wardrobes in a period room. The colour is agreed with you.
Looking after your furniture
Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it’s worth looking after. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall beforehand
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Let us know which walls face outside
Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.
Do not dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut because damp air ends up in the wardrobes. Opening a window now and then helps.

What it costs
What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. The main factors are:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Parking and unloading on your street
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- How big the furniture is
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
Before the design visit
There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:
- Your postcode and the borough
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
- Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
For a quote for fitted wardrobes in Clapham, tell us about the room on our contact form. Let us know the room and the rough idea. We’ll arrange a design visit, then send a written quote.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
My home in Clapham is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?
Yes, that is normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. We also work around skirting boards, picture rails and cornices. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.
I live near Clapham High Street station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Lambeth and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room.
Do photos help?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you fill in our short enquiry form.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.
What fitted wardrobes cannot fix
Some parts of a job need another trade, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can send us a few details through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

Clapham homes and fitted wardrobes
In the area around Clapham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 45%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. The National Heritage List has 129 entries within half a mile of the centre of Clapham. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Clapham is on or near a main road, tell us during the design visit. That way we can plan where to load and unload.
Carlyle's House, about 1.9 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Close to Larkhall Park? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright. If your children go to Clapham Manor Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
