Fitted wardrobes across SW8: what to expect

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about wasted space beside the chimney breast and wardrobes that are full to bursting.

On the morning of the fitting, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

How our quotes work

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry

  • Built around your room
  • Over 300 projects completed
  • Built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood

How to get a quote

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, once the room is measured and the design talked through. For a quote, use our contact form.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across SW8

Many older bedrooms across SW8 keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Either way, each piece is fitted to the walls and floor as they are.

In the SW8 postcode district, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 29%) and the years since 2000 (about 28%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. About 28% of homes in SW8 were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 68% of households in the SW8 postcode district, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs, so a van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.

Kennington: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Mark, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent. If you live near Vauxhall Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

Honest limits

We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in SW8

Most people come to us because they’ve simply run out of space. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.

We are often asked to help with:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall

Flats, leases and landlords

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so let us know about it at the measuring visit.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

What affects the price in SW8

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. This is what makes the difference:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • The finish: spray painted or hand painted
  • How square the room is
  • How big the furniture is

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, then set it out in the quote.

Before the design visit

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. It’s useful to include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Where you live, with the postcode

We quote once we’ve seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, then send a quote in writing. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, use our contact form.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in SW8

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

That depends on how much space there is in front of the wardrobe. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, we can arrange Saturdays. Just mention it when you contact us, and we will see what we can do.

How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?

Every job is priced for its room: size, internal fittings, the finish and how tricky the walls are all play a part. You will get a written quote once we’ve measured up.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot, especially with rough sizes. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We cover London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

Each piece is made in our workshop for the room it’s going into, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the design visit.
